Amber engine light and red flashing oil light

Featured Replies

Hi Guys

I have a mk1 Octavia vRS that since yesterday has decided to become a mini disco, the oil light keeps sporadically flashing red with a short beep. And the engine management light is constantly on amber. The car does have a shady history with regards to the oil sump, a big hole was put in the sump, but the car wasn't moved until a new one was fitted and oil re-filled. The oil light comes on occasionally anyway, but nothing seems to stop it, i have had the sensors changed and it has been put on a diagnostic machine and nothing ever shows up. The Oil light however has got ALOT worse since yesterday, before it would come on at most 1-2 times a month, it came on 3 times before i reached the end of the road yesterday. Each time it stopped flashing before beeping and flashing again.

Have any of you guys got any idea as to what the problem may be? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks :S

Low oil pressure due to a blocked oil pump pickup is very common these days, but at the same time a faulty oil pressure switch could be the culprit

, my advise would be to get a new oil pressure switch fitted as they are cheap, if the fault is still present you ll need to remove the sump and clean out all the carbon stuck in the oil pump strainer HTH

Thanks for the quick reply Allytech.

The car had a full main dealer service about a month ago, would this not have been checked then?

No, the strainer is inside the oil sump so is not something that can be checked easily or as part of a service i m afraid

Ok Thanks for the advice mate will get it checked!

I've seen this before on the 1.8s, also as the sump has no gasket and sealer is used, it's possible that some excess sealer has entered the sump and has been picked up by the strainer.

Get it sorted ASAP - low oil pressure will kill an engine very quickly.

I had this and as has been mentioned it was the strainer that was practically blocked by carbon, very lucky to escape without any damage, I'd sort it NOW!
