Heating problem - Note: Car does not have air con

Featured Replies

Hi -

I have a 06 1.9TDI (no Air Conditioning) and I've just noticed in the cold weather that with the air temperature dial set to HOT and fan on any speed but most noticable at setting 4 that sometimes the air goes from hot to cold. Its like as if someone temporarly switched the temperature dial to COLD. Most noticable when cornering. Any ideas?

Sounds like it could be low on coolant to me......

Do they have the flap motor problem like my Fabia had? Mine used to go from cold (air con on) to bloomin hot when I braked. Aparently the flap motor was knackered?

Might be something like this?

Ben

Coolant low, or problem with heater controls and/or mixer box flaps.

Thanks Ken.

I have a 1.9tdi without aircon also, ive noticed this on my car and other previous cars.

My dash pod went nuts this morning, it turned out the coolant was extremely low, but the tank wasn't empty.

I've experienced this on several cars before, it feels as though theres a pocket of air in the car thats considerably cooler than the rest. Then when you turn, you get a cool breeze go over your body.

Hi Browny_37,

Thats it exactly i.e. you get a cold breeze every now and again.

It will be great if a top up of coolant will do the trick. I've checked the car in to the garage to get it sorted so I'll report back with what they find.

One question: If the coolant was low shouldn't there be an alarm in the dashboard I'm seeing none. Is that what you mean by dash pod?

im not sure, my vRS had coolant low warning but it also had maxidot - found that out when I didn't replace the cap properly on the header tank

Browny is spot on, warm and cold air has different densities and therefore different levels of inertia. When cornering the cold denser air is pushed around and until the car interior is consistently warmed this cold air can slosh around causing a breeze.

Just try driving around with a small helium balloon in the car and you'll see how much the air moves around when you corner. Your skin is very sensitive to slight temperature changes so you notice the cooler air. When you're done with the experiment, suck in the helium and have a squeaky laugh.....!

I would agree with milnei -

Common thing on cold mornings, cold denser air pools in the footwells and is 'sloshed' about when cornering. You feel it on your hands but don't notice it when the footwells are cold as you are (hopefully) wearing shoes, socks and trousers.

It also hits you when warm air is forced into the footwells, the colder air is displaced and you suddenly feel a cool draught, some people report feeling a cold draught from the ashtray area but this is most likely the cold air being displaced.

Have a look in the coolant header tank and you should see two metal prongs, this is the coolant level sensor, the heater matrix is more often than not the highest part of the coolant system but I have had many low coolant warnings and the heating still works fine.

Hi -

Just in case some one still needs help with cold draft from dash. I have finally found the problem from another thread on Briskoda.

The thread title to look for is "Cold Air coming from the area around the ash tray/gear stick " hope this helps someone.

BTW my mechanic couldn't find any problem I though he just didn't check anything. But from the above thread you'll see it is a weird occurrance which causes problem.

Thanks for taking time to reply to my question,

Regards,

octojoe.
