My car In snow

Featured Replies

i dont think occurs to them that you should start off in seccond and keep revs low! I got my motorbike out this morn to go to work as i day wana catch bus at silly o clock in the morn and then it decided to snow up until i got to work and then it stoped :p rubish luck haha (i have got an illegal tyre on the rear wheel of my bike and i change the front to a winter 1 the other day so it wasent tooo bad still a bit hairy tho!!!)

The council up here just made things worse - they tried to plough my road - then the plough got stuck in the snow - so they just reversed out of the road and left the snow drift there in the middle of the road!!!

snow! :|

You guys really have had No Snow have you? I woke on Sunday morning to 13 inches of snow!

Yes I went and cleared by driveway - 2 hours of digging snow off the drive - plus moving the attempt by the council to clear part of the road - then gave up with a huge snow drift across the road!

Here are a few pics:-

I think that you are one of the lucky ones, we got that much just last night, so its back to digging this morning. Along with the freezing conditions, the depth of snow on the roofs is up to the level of any vent stacks.

When you finay uncover your car from the snow remember to icescrape the insied of your windscreen :p

Post up when you've fitted them and let us know what difference they make. I am quite keen on the spare wheels idea as I don't really push the car too much these days so don't need any more grip unless it's really icy or snowy.

Am wondering what the ideal width for snow wheels would be - rally cars always seem to run narrow tyres in the snow, presumably cos it cuts down thro the snow quicker. I like the idea of my vRS on skinny 165s or something teararsing through the snow. :D

Jonboy99 just do it!

Have 185/60/15 Continental wintercontact TS800s on Audi A3 rims (£50 on fleabay for the set) on my Fabia VRS SE. They are incredible in the snow and ice and go up hills that RAV4s slip on!

Save wear on the standard tyres as well so the only extra outlay is the wheels.

I got stuck in the snow today beached it on a huge mound.

I am sick fed up of being told by people that this is the wrong approach when I suggest using 2nd. One bloke was spnning like mad in a Fiesta on Christmas Eve. I said "try 2nd" then my neighbour (a traffic cop) came and said the same thing. Finally the bloke says "well let's see you do any better". 5 mins later his car was back out on the main road. "how did you do that mate?" "2nd gear ya muppet"

Cheers tight git and to others offering advice. Just got a set of those a3 alloys sorted (looks like anything pre 03 and possibly some 03 models will fit, they changed PCD after that), just waiting for some blizzaks to arrive from mytyres now. Have a feeling that might take a while!

I thought this only really applied to relatively low geared petrol cars. I've found it much trickier to do the same with a higher geared turbo diesel and keep off boost - starting gently in first and then up into second is working for me just now

I would have thought in theory this would apply even more to the vRS - first gear is far lower than most equivalent petrol cars and the torque higher. However i've found that whenever ive got stuck in the last few days, trying second gear hasn't got me anywhere - the wheels still spin on tickover.

with high tourqe cars its hard to avoid spining but seccond gear applies to most cars as far as i know:) I tend to use the rocking effect if i get stuck, pop it in first and let it rock on biting point, then when you get some momentum let some throttle in and youll pull away (you may spin) then as soon as u can pop it in seccond and let it find its feet the up to 3rd and your away. i hate traction controll my dads mazda has it and it wont let you do anything in slippy conditions i just turn it off :p also i find momentum gets you evrywhere if you cant get up a hill but theres a hill bind you (make sure your alone) gather some momentum and see if you can get up other side works well on shallow hills.:)

Yeah second gear, rocking and ESP off is what I have been using and I haven't been stuck yet. Even at minus 13 this morning

No problems with my sdi, not enough poke to spin the wheels even in the snow :)

Does bostin handbrake turns too

So giving myself a boost leak would make my vrs run better in the snow ;)

haha

I have always wondered if you could get a switchable remap that not only give a performance mode, but an economy mode with low boost. This setting would be useful in snow and slippery conditions.
