Heated windscreen?

Featured Replies

I dug my Fabia out of the snow this morning, and after a great deal of effort getting the ice off the windscreen and unsticking the wipers (if you try and use the wipers on the old Fabia and they're stuck, it blows a fuse, as I found out last year!) I thought "there has to be an easier way".

I've got the Yeti on my shortlist as my next motor in 2010 - does anyone know if there is a heated windscreen option? I can't see it in the brochure, but having read many a post in this forum there's quite a lot that's not in the brochures!

By the way it's been great reading people's reports on their new Yetis (especially the photos) - thanks for those. They look great in white, but I think silver is the colour for me (as I don't like cleaning cars!).

 We think alike :giggle:

Mine will be cleaned - when the temperature gets above freezing!

If you buy yours from Mitchells in Chester, they will wash it for free every Saturday B)

No heated screen but as recommended in the handbook I leave the wipers in the service position which helps prevent this problem.

I loath heated shreens, blurs the view at night. My Jagur has a heated screen and on a rainy night images are blurred particularly with headlamps coming towards one. It is a distraction that I can do with out. It only takes a second to clean a frozen screen with a watering can.

I had the same issues with the last car I drove with a heater screen - Cosworth :(

I went for Musavado brown for this reason. I meant dirt is brown not silver isn't it!?!

Hi, Its my belief that Ford have the exclusive rights to heated front screen glass technology and will not let any other manufacuure outside their wider group (inc Jaguar) use it - so much for sharing what many would regard as a safety benefit!!

My Octavia is pretty good at clearing the screen so long as the air con is on but not brilliant if the air is saturated and several people in the car.

Have been told by salesperson that the Yeti has an electric heating element to assit demist of front screen - not sure if this is fact or how effective it is?

Dunno about any electric heat, but defropsting works quite well. Also, the design of the engine compartment quite clearly ducts warm air from the engine up to exit just in from´nt of the windshield across the whole widthe of the car. If this is for heating or aerodynamic reasons, I do not know.

It seems to defrost and warm up a lot faster than my old 57 plate Octy 105 PD  Thankfully. The Octy was the pits at defrosting....

Yes, Ford have the patent on the heated screen which is why you will only have found it on Ford group cars until recently. The exception to this is Volvo who rejected it on safety grounds (due to compromised visibility in certain conditions). Recently, Volkswagen have started to offer a heated screen on the Passat and so either the Ford patent has expired or VW have dug deep into their pockets......

Been looking about on Google and there's a few car makes that offer heated windscreens as options, Ford do this as standard on the Kuga. Also read some interesting debate in Ford forums about the visibility issues at night because of the mesh, with some people saying it's awful and others saying it's fine.

I do tend to use warm (not hot) water to defrost in seconds, but sometimes am not parked near the house, so would have liked a heated screen. My Fabia is not really that great at clearing the screen. For the insides I really need to invest in some better microfibre cloths or something. I tried one of those plug-in instant heaters off Ebay, it was terrible, maybe a hairdryer would be better  Basically I'm getting lazy in my old age and would rather spend a few hundred on a heated screen than a few minutes manually scraping and wiping each time!!

Regarding colour, I do like the brown colour, never thought I would but that was one of the roadshow Yetis and in the flesh I thought it was quite a nice brown, I did think it would hide dirt well. But having had a silver car before, they do wear the mud well. In fact my black Fabia doesn't look too bad at the moment, much better than the white Mk6 Gold tdi down the road which looks really, really bad. People have started to write "clean me" in the mud.

Far more effective than the heated screen is a block heater or fuel pre-heater.

Not only does this provide hot air for a very rapid demist and defrost, but it also warms the engine oil, so saving fuel (negating that burned if fuel powered) and also saving on engine wear.

The Daihatsu Terios comes with a heated windscreen as standard in the top model. I found that the "Max" setting along with the "Recirculated Air" mode soon cleared the ice on the front screen.

I used to use a Mondeo with heated screen - really disliked it an noit very effective in winter.

Have an Smax too, and the heated screen and washers are really impressive. It is simply superb in snow and ice too - but then it has Volvo bits underneath !
