VRS petrol - how tuneable?

Featured Replies

I've been pondering about buying a used VRS estate, but just wondered what spec the engine is as I'd probably be looking for more power?

I know that the Mk1 20v lump was not to the same spec as other VAG versions - I had a BAM coded 1.8t 20v in my old Elise (from a Cupra R), which had a bigger turbo, stronger internals etc..

Forgive my ignorance, but is the Octy 2.0 identical to the Mk5 Golf and other hot VAG variants or not?

Cheers

Yes. It is identical to the standard Mk5 GTI engine, with a K03 turbo. GTI Ed30 and Audi S3 gets the K04.

depends there are 3 different TFSI engines

there is the BWA mk 5 GTi/leon fr/vRS, then there is the BWJ/BYD ko4 turbo'd ed30/leon cupra and then the BHZ k04 audi S3

if you are after tunability as the main factor then bang for buck you need a seat leon cupra or golf ed 30. these run a lower compression ratio and a bigger(k04)turbo. a remap alone on these willl see 280 bhp. get a stage 2 remap and a tubo back exhaust and you'll be in the 320hp region get the fuel pump and intercooler ontop and your pushing up even more. guys have been seeing huge figures on these with all the bolt ons .

the vRS TFSI has the BWA engine. slightly higher compression ratio, and the smaller k03 tubo. its less laggy and more responsive lower down the rev range but lacks in comparison at tht top of the rev range,

stage 1 map 230-245hp 280Ibft

srtage2 map, exhaust and intake 260hp 290tIbft

stage 2+ map. fuel pump, intake intercooler turbo pipes etc 280hp 320Ibft+

few guys on here have the k04 conversion on their vRS.

they have made circa 320hp 310Ibft and rate it very highly.

dont get me wrong the k04 cars run some huge figures, and are properly fast, but believe me the k03 is still very quick in stage 2+ guise. quick enough straight line wise to p!ss of a mk2 focus RS owner.(you wont be fatser, but he wont be driving away from you)

TFSI engine is mega tunable, and now they have been out a while there ae alot of options arriving on the market now just like the 1.8T engine

That's great - thanks for the info.

I think Stage 2 would probably be sufficient as it gives a useful hike without having to mess around with different turbos etc.

isn't the petrol the newer TSI? or is it all the same thing just different achromyms?

stage 1 makes the car feel fast with the huge jump in torque, when you go to stage 2 the car doesnt feel hugely faster(not like going from stage 1 to 2) but it holds onto the torque and power for a longer period of the rev range. so realistically it is quite alot more faster

stage 2+ is where it is at IMO. the standard fuel pump cant handle to much mid range torque with out getting fuel cuts. 290Ibft is the norm. get a fuel pump fitted and you can add 30Ibft to that. the difference in mid range pulling power is horrendous and makes it feel like going from standard to stage 1 again.

there is no way id pay for a K04 conversion from new, however if a second hand turbo cropped up i more than likely would go for it to be honest. I pretty much have the majority of other hardware required already

the new car has the TSI which afaik is slightly more responsive to tuning, but the TSI hasnt been out long in the vRS at the moment. the op is after a used vRS which means he'll probably end up with a TFSI

Mines a BYD Si. Not sure where you are plucking your engine codes from. :S

in that case the TFSI Cupra has a different engine code to the ed30, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SEAT_Le%C3%B3n

didint realsie thought they were same internally

They are the same just have different codes.

sweet

the above info is still relevant thoguh about tunability etc. why couldnt the vRS have had the ed 30 option. would 100% have shelled out the extra to get that

Its probably something to do with it being the 30th Anniversary of the original Golf GTi.

damn, ages to wait then

25th was a good car, too!

Until the RS owner gets his remapped too.

theres not a great deal left to do with the RS. Its the volvo block, they have a bit of tendancy to disintergrate past 300bhp, the Volvo S60/V70R that runs 300bhp quite often falls apart completely standard. Rumour has it that its based on a 25 year old audi block :p

All you ever here about in reviews of the RS is how powerful RS is and how good the engine is etc etc. speaks volumes about the TFSI at stage 2+ then if they can keep up. on a side not the Focus ST260 mountune had the legs on the RS in the evo review back along up until about 120 iirc.

on a side not the RS engine isnt as good as you'd think.

http://www.evo.co.uk/videos/trackdayvideos/246493/renault_megane_250_cup_v_focus_rs_v_seat_leon_cupra_r_v_golf_gti.html

new cupra R with the S3 engine in (261hp/250Ibft) smashed the RS around the track, also beat the new meganne 250 cup. so the fact that a stage 2 car should be putting out S3 power but with more torque, a stage 2+ car would smash it even more.

the only thing the RS had is dynamically it is the better car.

back to what was said eralir, the stage 2+ k03 is a very capable car indeed

hmm make me wonder what my a4 would do with 300+ bhp
