Yeti SE 140 4WD ordered

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Well have taken the plunge and ordered a Yeti SE 140 4WD from Drive the Deal.

It was a 10% deposit on the price of the car (minus vat and extras).

Spoke to the (DtD) London Scoda dealer today and all looks good but factory closes for two weeks over Christmas (grr) so it will be March now before I get my greasy paws on it.

The car is driven up to me here in the North West but I can opt for a transporter or may collect it myself.

Altogether saving over £2,400 on list which is not bad for such a new model.

I will have to pay the extra vat unless I pay all the cost before December which would be difficult and I wouldnt feel secure handing over that much cash combined with a long wait.

Gone for Muscovado with a sunroof as I will be selling my convertible privately to pay for it so sunroof is a compromise.

I'll let you know how I get on.

Cheers, Dave

PS. thanks to plumber for the muscovado pics

Hi fuzzybunny,

Congratulations on your order sounds very nice; it is a great colour the Muscovado particularly for the Monster.

Roll on March then, will look forward to the pics. :)

Best wishes for Christmas,

TP

Sounds nice !

I've gone for the sunroof too - looking forward to it - guess which car we'll be taking through the Blackpool Illuminations in 2010 !?

If they'll allow it, you could put a chunk of deposit on your credit card - will avoid VAT, and you'd be protected if they went bust ?

Nice one - Will be interested to know how it all goes using DtD as I also checked there last night and saw some good savings of around £2000+ (though I will probably still give my local stealer an opportunity to match it). Have you decided whether to have it driven, trailered or collect?

Good choice of colour, I like the brown and think it works well in not showing the mud, it's currently my top colour choice too. The sunroofs on these are really good, huge and they also open (unlike the Qashqai).

Tough choice on the VAT but I agree, I think I'd also prefer not to pay it all up front. It won't cost that much extra as a result.

Anyway good luck with it.

I shall also be opting for Muscovado and buying from DtD. I like natural colours greens browns kaki etc to harmonize and camouflage into the country side. I will be buying a 170 CR Yeti. that is unless something better suddenly pops up or drops its price dramatically, unlikely. I will also try to take advantage of the scrapage scheme but have missed out on the reduced VAT unfortunately by not being prepared. I still have a few technical ponderances.

I like Muscovado too, it looks brilliant on the car!

Great choice,

I bought Rainworth Skodas demonstrator at the start of November (drove it Sunday, collected it Tuesday), in Muscovado with lots of extra kit on it, including the sunroof, absolutely brilliant. I always have the blind back when driving, but if you leave it back and it gets cold, the car automatically closes it to conserve heat, I'm wondering if it will do the same in the Summer to keep it cool.

I wouldn't have dreamt of ordering a Brown car, but having seen this one I really liked it and with the current weather, it really doesn't show the dirt (until you look closely).

I also like the green and the cappuccino but the muscovado was the strongest and shouldnty show the mud stains.

Oh my god mud! what am I saying surely I cant get it dirty :smirk:

As far as the vat goes I understand its full payment before December or nothing.

The Vat office is wise to all the tricks and doesnt allow part payments.

Even the deposit is not feee of the vat increase. (grr!)

Cheers, Dave

PS Thanks guys for making me feel so welcome on this forum.

PS Thanks guys for making me feel so welcome on this forum.

I read the following as saying that part payments and deposits have their Vat calculated at the time the payment is made.

http://www.hmrc.gov....stalments.htm#1

"Advance payments and deposits

An advance payment, or deposit, is a proportion of the total selling price that a customer pays before you supply them with goods or services. If you ask for an advance payment, the tax point is whichever of the following happens first:

•the date you issue a VAT invoice for the advance payment

•the date you receive the advance payment

You include the VAT on the advance payment on the VAT Return for the period when the tax point occurs.

If the customer pays you the remaining balance before the goods are delivered or the services are performed, another tax point is created when whichever of the following happens first:

•you issue a VAT invoice for the balance

•you receive payment of the balance

So you include the VAT on the balance on the return for the period when the tax point occurs."

Congrats on the order - muscavado was my alternate to white. I've never know a car that looked good in so many colours. I haven't had much chance to play with my sunroof yet given the snow. If anyone wants any pictures of the roof, I'll take some when the snow has gone.

I thought it you paid now, the VAT point was now also !

Any Beanies on the forum care to clarify ?

Congrats, it will be worth the wait. My 140 pulls like a train.

I think the vat thing depends on the 'intention' behind the deposit or part payment.

if its clearly to avoid vat at the new rate then the following clause may apply or dealers choose to air on the side of caution.

see advice to retailers below.

11 Anti-forestalling legislation

Legislation has been introduced to prevent avoidance (forestalling) where arrangements are made to account for VAT at 15% in advance of 1 January 2010 in respect of goods or services to be provided afterwards. The legislation will only apply to certain transactions and is unlikely to affect you unless:

1. you receive prepayments from persons connected to you for future supplies; or

2. you issue advance VAT invoices to persons connected to you for future supplies; or

3. you provide or arrange funding for your customers to enable them to pay in advance for goods or services to be supplied by you; or

4. you issue VAT invoices that do not have to be paid for at least six months; or

5.you receive pre-payments or issue advance VAT invoices in excess of £100,000, and this is not normal commercial practice; or

6. you supply rights or options to receive goods and services from you free of charge or at a discount.

Detailed guidance on the operation of this anti-forestalling legislation is available on line at

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/VAT/forms-rates/rates/rate-rise-guidance.pdf

I would give your local dealer the chance to match the deal I have always got the quote from DtD and then shown it to the dealer and in both cases they matched the deal.

Personally I prefer to keep the connection local just in case there are warranty issues and if like me you are on your second Skoda from the same dealer then you can play the card that this was the reason why your brought it from them i.e for the support.

All the best

Jerry

I agree with you Jerry,

It is my intention to give them a chance. I doubt that they will make an effort though or at least the sales man wont. After I took one for a test drive I asked about what sort of discount I might be able to negotiate with him. He just looked aghast and told me what the Skoda price was. He did not seem at all interested. I may be wrong, I shall see. I know who the owner is, not personally, he seems friendly enough he can be seen walking about the premises often enough, smiling at customers filling up for petrol, he always says hello, comment on the weather, that sort of thing. I could approach him after the sales person. This is the sort of area where most people buy local, for practically anything, its a sort of captive customer base, typical of West Wales and old Cardiganshire. The Cardies are tighter than the Scots are reputed to be, their famous for it. they have no pockets just like a shroud. :wall: We will just have to see. Sales folk outlets and the like are used to dealing with the farming community so they do not give much away.

It would be convenient to have the car serviced by them and I would prefer it. If it was a problem for them I would travel to somewhere else, even if it was pain. I would cut my nose so to speak.

I did email my local dealer with the DtD offer (this was after they refused to give me a price unless I was prepared to buy on the day I had the test drive.).

They acknowledged my email but didn’t reply.

Hey, no harm in asking though

1.2. The relevant bit is "persons connected to you", I can't see how this would apply to an "arms length" transaction between a car dealer and customer.

3. Sort out your own funding.

4. Delivery times are well under six months.

5. £100,000, not for a Yeti!

6. You are buying a car not a right or an option.

This legislation is aimed at far bigger fish than car dealers selling Yetis to ordinary customers.

If you are worried then take proper advice.

2.5% of, say, £15000 is £375. You would have to invest £15000 for quite a time to earn £375 in after tax interest.

See http://www.which.co.uk/advice/your-rights-when-paying-by-credit-card/chargeback-on-credit-and-visa-debit-cards/ for the Which view of the protection available if you pay by Visa Debit Card.

I take your point Tom and I do agree with your reasoning, our only problem is how the dealers interpret it.

If normal policy is to take a deposit and not issue an invoice till the balancing payment is made why should dealers put themselves out to change policy if that could be seen as deliberately trying to avoid paying the higher vat rate.

Problem with the vat guidance is that is can be interpreted in many ways so I suspect dealers will air on the side of caution on what ties in with normal operations. The only offer on the table is to pay the total cost up front. I presume this is not unusual in business as many people will want to pay in advance for budgetary reasons, so from a dealer pint of view would not be seen as deliberately trying to avoid the vat increase. If that full payment included paying some by Visa then the buyer would be covered by Visa insurance on the whole amount, ( I hope)

I tried to call them today but my contact was off (probably at a booze up) so will try again after Christmas.

My god is it Christmas already?

Happy Christmas everyone!

Oh crumbs, They are just playing a game one idea is to give your number and state the other cars you are looking at i.e. Kuga, Peugeot, Kia. Tell them the prices of the other cars etc and keep playing the card I would prefer the Skoda if the price was right. If all else fails then DtD it is...

Hi Fuzzybunny,

I did the same as you via DtD and with similar saving.

Awaiting on my 140 4wd SE, somewhere around end Jan early Feb.

Extras I'm going to fit are Winter tyres, Mud flaps and Towbar ( in that order as I don't think I'll be towing much with the amount of snow about us right now!)

Hi Graham,

Excellent news, good choice may I say.

Be really interested to know how you get on with getting a toew bar fitted, dealer qouted me £528 (eek!)

Have you got on OK with the Skoda dealer linked to DtD?

Cheers, Dave

Hi,

Skoda dealer has been first class - let me change my order about a bit after the order was in - and have been very prompt/efficient to my queries - which were many in the early days!

Gone for the factory fitted Tow bar preparation pack - haven't had a price for the tow bar fitting yet as agreed to discuss this with the dealer when the car is nearer to being delivered - will let you know!

Cheers

Graham
