Did any of you guys consider an Octavia Scout?

Featured Replies

Hi guys, I guess this is really a question for the Yeti owners amongst us but when going through the purchasing process - did any of you consider the Octavia 4x4 or Scout as an alternative?

Im seriosuly considering a purchase of either a 1.8TSi Scout or 1.8TSi Yeti. Cards on the table; currently Im favouring the Scout overall.

The main reasons for prefering the Scout are:

  • Looks. (think the Scout looks more 'manly' ) :p
  • Proven platform (the Yeti is nothing revolutionary in terms of hardware but a number of the test/demo cars Ive been out in have had creaks).
  • Experience (naturally appeals more to me I guess as Ive just sold my MK2 VRS estate and I thought it was a wonderful family holdall!)
  • Pricing actually seems better value with vat free offer and 0%.
  • Talk of a Yeti Scout on the horizon but isnt available yet or in the near future?
  • I'd be saving £4600 on the Scout and its options over RRP

The reasons I feel the Yeti may be better are that:

  • It has more rear legroom - better for the three year old and her seat.
  • I'd spec the Panoramic roof which I love the idea of (not available on the Octy)
  • I'd be saving £2600 on the Scout and its options over RRP

Just wondered if any of you guys went through this same thought process and if so, why you opted for the Yeti?

Any help would be much appreciated,

Thanks in advance,

Lee

Hi,

You are sitting higher in a Yeti and its compact. Manouvering in car parks and other narrow places is much easier in a Yeti. Wife love the car just because of that.

Getting in and out of the car is also easier bacause of the hight. I think the looks is great.

The Yeti is based on the Octavia (A5) platform.

Don't just look at what you are saving over list price, if you want to buy a car that appears good value because it's overpriced to begin with look at a Vauxhall Insignia.

The Yeti has a nicer interior than the Octavia, it feels more like the Superb.

The Haldex system on the Yeti is the latest generation system where as the Octavia is still using the previous version. Both still good but the Yeti is much smoother in it's operation and less likely to actually stop moving even on poor surfaces because it's full time 4x4 but only a small portion of the power goes to the rear wheels during normal operation.

The Yeti is a new model out and doesn't have any manufacturer supported campaigns to help shift models as they are selling themselves at the moment.

The sunroof on the Yeti is nothing short of amazing!

Did have the same thoughts, but along with the really nice interior (the Elegance is a super place to be) we can get both our mountain bikes in the back, where they are safer from sticky fingers.

Octavia Scout would be a good choice, but I have to say that I think the Yeti is a smarter choice (new distict model, better resale?).

There's always the Superb Combi 1.8TSI 4x4 too if the budget will stretch that far. Very nice car.

Oh yeah..... I forgot about that.

You should work here!

I have just traded in my 1.9 PD Octy 2 Estate DSG. Great car, the driving seat in the Octy was great for me (I'm a big lad) it gave my legs full support. My wife is just over 5 foot and had to have cushions to bulk up the seat so she could reach the controls. We are both in our mid 50's, and found the Octy hard to climb out of. But it is a stunning car.

Is that an offer? :D

I had a quick think about the Scout. A bit cumbersome in comparison, not too sure about the ground clearances but it would more likely get stuck here. I am not interested in petrol full stop. The TDi is not offered in a higher state of tune for some crazy reason, Yeti available with 170 bhp engine with torque hike and no consummation handicap.

I thought though that the latest Scout was coming equipped with Haldex 4?????

What is all this about a Yeti Scout?

What will that have on it?

How much?

When or is that purely speculative?

We didn't want anything as big as the Octavia (besides, it wouldn't fit in the garage), the "legacy" Skodas mostly come with the now-dated PD engines (for the moment), the Yeti is better equipped for the price (e.g. leather and "curve projector" xenons on the Elegance), it's got a bit more character and it's an excellent drive. I would also expect the residuals to be a bit better. We were originally looking at Golf/Golf Plus but the Yeti looked better in just about every respect. And we weren't expecting the 4x4 capability to be as useful as it has in the last couple of days!

Looked at the Scout when they first came out, considered a demo also looked at the standard 4x4 as well. Finished up with a Golf 4motion TDI as the wife was not keen on the estate look in comparison to our previous Ocatvia hatchback.

The problem with the Golf which I should have thought more about was ground clearance even with 4x4 it's sitting on the floor, hence switching to the Yeti.

If I had a choice between the two then it has to be the Yeti for reasons such as better drive, superior visibility, flexible rear seating and kit like the off-road button. The only thing the Scout does better is boot space but that means sacrificing off-road ability.

Not really, as the Octy I had for 4 years was so damn perfect that it was booooring. I just could not bear getting another one.

I seriously considered a Superb Combi, but I did not want to wait that long.

The Yeti is just funky, fun, damn practical and DIFFERENT to be fun and practical at the same time. i do not need the back seats much, but I do want powerful performance on the Autobahn, security to be able to move in snotty weather and some fun at times. The off-road is marginally interesting on our annual month in Costa del Sol, where some of the interesting sites are waaaay off the beaten path.

So far it looks and feels like my expectations will be met.

Cheers for the replys guys. :)

Most of what you say seems to make good sense; I did however miss one thing that really put me off the Yeti as the choice of car. Its the full leather on the Elegance! I'd much much rather have the alcantara and leather option that can be specced on the Scout (and Yeti SE!). Going for the SE makes it more costly for less effectively, even with all the options selected.

After reading the views here though I have to admit Im coming round to the Yeti way of thinking!

James - Im sure both the FL Scout and Yeti run the same gen. four haldex system. I'll return your PM soon btw - thanks.

Useful thread, as the 2 Skoda's I was considering were the Scout and Yeti, and like most here, the Yeti is ahead at the moment. I am sure the Scout wouldn't cope with the off-road stuff I do.

If I can add my point of view. I'm coming from owning an Octavia for four years. It is a very very good car. However I'm replacing it because I have the following issues with it:

1. the seating position in the front hurts my back now.

2. difficult to get changed in (I'm a windsurfer) this is because the roof height is very low....

3. The boot is not square and hence for all the camping equipment is not easy to load

4. When reversing it is very difficult to judge the back (I have no parking sensors)

5. the length makes it very hard to park in multi story car parks

6. The rear seats are not very flexible i.e. they don't fold flat and the bench doesn't split to allow fold flat.

This is my point of view but I have friends with octavia's that have the same issue's.

All the best

Very late reply but I have just decided to switch from Octavia Scout to Yeti for many of the reasons given previously. I too have had a Golf 4Motion but found it was useless in the deepish floodwater I often encounter around the Yorkshire Dales. The Octy has been great, but the seating position is low and it is a long car to manoevre. The Yeti seems more practical in all ways and has the latest engine/technology as well. Although by the time mine is actually delivered (ordered 2 weeks agho, dealer thinks it'll be the new year before I get my hands on it), it may well be obsolete!

Interesting statement emoticon-0112-wondering.gif please explain more.

I thought he was joking :)

I was going to buy a superb estate DSG cr170, then I discovered that the Yeti is now available with diesel DSG & 4x4.

So I chose the Yeti

The Scout isn't available with diesel DSG 4x4, otherwise I would have bought the scout instead of my old L&K last time - my wife preferred the looks of the scout & she is happy with the Yeti.

The Yeti also has it on looks too. (IMHO)

Mike

Octavia 4x4 or Scout as an alternative?

I though about these also, but they also had the older diesel engines, which are less refined than the latest VW common rails in the Yeti, unless this has changed recently of course!

The Octavia Scout is equipped with the CRD 140 since Wk 22 (June). According to elsewhere on this forum it has been fitted with Haldex 4 since Wk 22 2008. It is also a real man's car in comparison with the soft and furry Yeti! I'll fetch my coat...

This is a comparison of apples and pears. The Octavia is a saloon and the Yeti is a SUV.

So higher ground clearance and slightly longer suspension.

Higher seating position and so on.

I need these attributes, first to clear the ditches around here and second to see over the hedges for oncoming traffic.

The off road ability is more important for dealing with floods, rough ground and winter conditions.

If I lived in town I would have bought a Scout or equivalent.

I thought the Scout was an estate and also had the same ground clearance of 180mm, but longer overhangs each end and lower than Yeti.

Hi Mike,

yes the Scout and the Monster are very closely related mechanically but you still have the low car like seating position in the Scout so the view out is not as good. Only driven a Scout once and from recollection I think the Yeti has the better ride and like my SE they are also fitted with the very weird for a semi off-road 4x4, 225/50 R17 W autobahn crunching tyres :wonder: why!!!

TP

I quite agree TP

I think the Yeti's I have test ridden had a better ride than my old L&k and I love the higher driving position. I had a 'classic' RR many years ago when the shape was still current and loved the high driving position. Wasn't so keen on the fuel economy though!

Mike
