Broken multiplugs

Featured Replies

Does anyone have any experience with getting multiplugs repaired?

My car occasionally throws the 17704 fault code (coolant temp sensor) and I finally got round to looking at it today, well some genius has unplugged the multiplug from it in the past and snapped the clip on the multiplug itself, so it looks like every so often the multiplug is coming loose and throwing the error code. Patched it up with electrical tape for now and a mate has suggested sticking it in with silicon gasket sealant for the long term.

I also have the same problem with the multiplug going into the pressure sensor at the top of my intercooler, I broke the clip on that one myself and have had it held in with cable ties for the last year or so, but I should really get it fixed I guess.

My question is really are these easy jobs for a garage or would I be better getting an auto electrician or someone similar to do it? I could probably do it myself if I could source the multiplugs from a scrap car's loom but it looks like a fiddly job to me and would rather have someone else take the responsibility for it! :S

Easy enough to do if your reasonably handy with a soldering iron. Just make sure, if you source a 2nd hand plug from another vehicle, that you cut the wires with enough length to work with. I always use heatshrink to cover any joins I make, so much neater than electrical tape.

with a bit of patience and a couple of small screwdrivers you can remove the connectors from multi pin plugs, might be easier if your soldering ain't too good (like mine). I used this method to swap the red and yellow wires on my new stereo and disconnect the K line.

If you can get the part numbers off the broken housings and then as Trundlenut said carefully release the retaining barbs on the metal contacts inside the old housing and slide them into the new one.

just take the part numbers into your local dealers there only a couple of quid each for the plugs, you can also get the repair wires for the plug, which have the metal contact which fits in the plug and a 7-8 inch piece of wire

Thanks guys, I'll pop into the dealer sometime and see if I can get the plugs with lengths of wire attached, if not then its a trip to the scrappy for a 1.8T car.

the plugs wont come with the wires attatched it'll just come as the plastic housing then you buy the wires seperately

....and the guys in the parts department will love you as they hate trying to identify connectors that fit inside the multi-plugs as the drawings on Etka are not that clear!
