Head vs. Heart

Featured Replies

I'm about to place an order for a Superb II Elegance having had one for a week long test drive - I loved the comfort and the toys so it was an easy decision to go for the Elegance trim

However, my decision about the engine will be a battle between my Head (2.0 TDi CR) and my Heart (3.6 V6).

To help sway this argument, does anyone know what extra trim/goodies I'd get on the V6 other than 4WD?

I've seen one post that mentions the V6 has a rear spolier as standard (which I definitely want) and read one review that mentioned the 3-spoked steering wheel with paddles?

All help with my battle of good vs. evil would be appreciated!

DSG comes as standard on the V6. The 3 spoke steering wheel and flappy paddles is an option at £345 I believe. If you do a limited mileage I would suggest you go for the V6! ( No DPF issues! ).

I'm only suggesting this because I'm seriously considering the V6 Superb estate myself! I do very few miles per year and I think because I will keep it for up to 6 years then it should be a good purchase!

It would be more wallet vs heart for me.... The wallet nearly always wins!

If driven hard the 3.6 can go below 10mpg B)

It would have to be the V6 for me :)

And me

If you actually drive the car then it has to be the CR, however if you do really low mileage or own an oil company then by all means buy the V6, but honestly who in there right mind would pick the V6 if either they are paying for the fuel themselves or doing normal mileage?

Just imagine the residuals on the V6 when you come to sell it!

If it's ( especially the estate ) kept for 5 years I wouldn't have thought there'd be much difference! Considering that they would be rare with a low mileage I think it wouldn't be too bad. There, convinced myself!! :D

Thanks for all your input. Fuel isn't an issue as my company pay all business miles and give me a private fuel allowance. My commute is only 18 miles a day anyway and I tend to use my bike unless it's snowing!

For the record, I currently drive a BMW 535d and can easily get that below 10mpg if I push it

The car will be bought on a private lease so the depreciation works for me. I will cover less than 40k miles over the 4 years so I will buy the car at the end of the lease period anyway.

Plus, has anyone else noticed the difference between diesel & petrol has fallen to next to nothing!

Would still like to know if anyone knows more about the rear spoiler being included on the V6?

V6 ftw! :D

Do it!

One thing to bear in mind is you may actually make money on the fuel allowance with the diesel?

Pretty much a win win situation there then.

Still a big difference in the MPG between the two though!

You could always add the spoiler on to any spec of car (probably with a huge saving over buying the V6 'just because' it came with the spoiler as std - if it does?)

The big decider for me is would i want to pay for the fuel and RFL to run a big gas guzzling car (in 4 years time)?

If you are happy with that then get the V6.

As i previously have said the only thing that would stop me buying the V6 would be the running costs - i love the torque you get with big V petrol engines, nowadays though you can get even more torque (= driveability) from a decent TDi !

Isn' the torque the same on the V6 as the CR170 albeit that it starts at 2500rpm instead of 1700? If we're talking torque :D then the OPs motor must be hard to beat! What is it....417ftlbs or so? :smirk:

You're clearly intending to live with this car for a long time. Make sure you get good long test drives in each version and see which you actually prefer driving. You may be surprised how good the 170 bhp diesel is - it may appeal to the heart too.

But (as the owner of a Y-registered BMW Z3 as a fun car as well as the Octavia vRS) I do know what a marvellous noise six cylinders make. I went for a long run in the Z3 today just for the fun of it - hood down and heater full on - terrific.

A final thought - will the Superb's rather more relaxed ride-handling compromise suit you coming from a 535d? If not, try an Octavia vRS.

The 3.6 does include the rear spoiler

I reckon the best trade is a 170 2.0 Elegance and have the boot spoiler fitted later, it is a worthy add on, makes the rear stretch to the eye a bit better imo.

Ok, the deed is done.

A scare story in todays press that petrol was going to hit £1.25 per litre this year peed me off so I decided to go for it.

3.6 V6 Elegance ordered.

Won't be delivered til April/May, but I'm sure will be worth the wait

Thanks to all for your advice and guidance - taken or not.

Congratulations.

You won't regret the 3.6 + DSG + 4x4. I haven't after 8 months.

Enjoy your new car when it comes. It is great to hear about someone throwing caution to the wind for a change. I wish I could have done the same!!!

Well done you, I'm sure you'll love it when it gets here.

I loved the 3.6V6 I demo'd, lovely car indeed.

Is it the hatch or estate you've ordered?

It's the saloon I've ordered in Pearl Black Magic with Onyx Leather. Same as the one I had on test drive - it looked cool sat on the drive.

The only extras I've omitted are the heated windscreen and solar sunroof. Everything else is on.
