Need A little advice on buying a Superb

Featured Replies

I currently own a 06 Fab vRS and now that we have a second child on the way the Fabia's boot and rear legroom are no longer ample for what we are carrying, so Ive been looking at 2006 Superb 1.9 130 Elegances spec cars. Can anyone advice on what options I should look out for and a rough ball park figure of what these cars are worth.

(Incidently, if anyone wants to downsize thier Superb 130 Elegance to a Fabia vRS I maybe able to help)

Alex

im sure rotodiesel will be here soon to praise the 130 tdi superb.....and maybe give some good tips.....but dont park it in front of a wall...its a skoda superb!! with or without the stalin grill :giggle:

Does the model you like have sat nav built in? does the rear seats fold independantly? check the superb for its usual faults as and when they happen .like carpet dampness on passengerside....that will be a pollen filter problem leading to major electrics issues later.....find a car thats low miles and low owners...and don write off the 140 tdi either....it has a few goodies more than the older spec superbs ... or if you can find one.......go for the edition 100.....thats a 130 with just about everything on it

130 PS AWX diesel engine (Euro Cat III) with 5 speed manual box and folding rear seats. No DPF engines - ever.

You need evidence of correct oil and non-idiot maintenance. No ex-cabs.

Buy as few extras over the base model as possible - the extras are bad value and unreliable. The only things worth adding to a base model are a tow bar (much more effective, useful and reliable than reversing sensors) and cruise control.

If you need satnav and HID lighting, buy them afterwards - you'll save a pile of money and get a more reliable job. The thing will depreciate faster than you can read the owner's manual, so buy the cheapest model. Piling extras onto a lemon does nothing for its basic problems (crappy dealers, serious design faults such as water ingress and soggy handling) - more expensive trim fixes none of these.

And a car cover - for when you can't stand the sight of it....

Thanks for the info, very usefull. I wrote off the 140 as I have read they are not as reliable as the 130s; something about the sump getting clogged up due to a drainage issue whch results in oil pump then engine failure - and for the sake of 10hp il stick to the 130.

The one ive seen has sat nav, the rear seats arent mentioned - I know the early ones didnt fold though. Its a 55 reg so may have folding rears, which would be handy.

Thanks rotodiesel. Are the factory Xenons rubbish then? towbar is an option I would never use to be honest. . Soggy handling im not fussed about, where do these cars like to let water in? How can I tell if its a DPF engine or not?

The folding rear seats came out in (IIRC May) 2004, so any 54 reg onwards will have them providing the car hadn't sat around for ages pre reg, the seat bases however do not lift up, so they are not as useful as you think they will be.

there is nothing wrong with the 140 tdi.....even though there is some scaremongering with the reliability issues with the oil pump.....personally i think its all down to poor servicing or even the lack of it thats giving some owners grief...thats why i bought my comfort facelift superb new...and i know the history of the vehicle......any car even vw audi ect with poor servicing is going to end up with trouble....one way or another.....you only have to read up on their forums !! or any other model forums!!

It all depends on what spec superb you are after wether classic comfort or elegance or even l+k.....look out for low mileage and low ownership.....and then compare the older superbs with the facelift versions....only subtle mods....but well worth it in my opinion.....thats why i didnt buy the older version that rotodiesel has and maybe hides with his cover...thats if he uses one :D

Failing that.....why not consider an octavia estate 130 tdi 6speed l+k model....it would be more than enough to cover the requirements you need for your family..and keep you cosseted in luxury ....regards andy

Hahahaha Roto, is that cab bit aimed at me I wonder lol,

You gotta get off this cars back, for a 1993 designed 1996 launch Passat it ain't at all a bad car.

Get the 1,9 mate, it's known territory, and proven as well, lacks all the MP induced muck that ruins all modern diesel cars right now.

4 things to check or expect

1 - Water Ingress, so if it's gonna live outdoors in a leafy area it will need checking regularly

2 - CV Boots & Joints, use the Roto fix if you have to have one at all, makes it cheaper next time if the mechanic doesn't spend an hour removing a solid bolt.

3 - Alternator pulley, it will squeal before 70k, and will fail eventually.

4 - Cambelt, 80k, £450 job, and have the auxbelts done at the sametime.

What it will offer you is this, a big car with a feeling of it being more than it actually is, proof is shut the boot on one, then shut the boot on anything else and the solid clunk feeling is evident, where on others it's a tin can dropping feeling, spec wise I'd be in for an Elegance, mines a Comfort, and it's leaps over the Classic, but I would've liked a sunroof, Leather and 17's tbh, if you can get a automatic one (2006 55) you'll have ppl saying how smooth the whole thing is, parts wise they are no more expensive than any other car, GSF offer good prices on good quality alternatives for the car, and the one they all forget, everyones got a Mondeo or Vectra, sales figures of a Superb in this country prevent that being the case with this car, so you get a wee bit of exclusivity at the same time, oh yeah and Passat B5.5 drivers tend to give you a bit of willy envy as you pull up with that extra bit of length, lol, the dark blue and red Metallic's are the nicest colours imo, although the sleeper imo is the beige/gold metallic, hth.

yeah ive noticed that superbia.....one vw driver actually came over to have a look at my car when i took wife to argos....couldnt believe it shared same components.....same style instrument console....and also comented on it being longer than his saloon...mind you i did previously give the car a pretty good clean inside and out, and the car does look similar to a big audi from a distance...but yes he was impressed...wonder if he will buy a skoda next time?

The pick of the crop would be the 1.9TDi anniversary edition in my opinion. All the bells and whistles and lovely in black inside and out. Wish I'd bought one but I got a 2.5TDi Elegance instead.

Edition 100, and yeah it's a good looking car, Black paint, light grey leather and piano black interior trim.

Yes, the black one is the smart buy in my opinion. Lovely car, best with the 1.9 TDi with no DPF.

...So thats settled then. Just need to find one for under £7k. Im not fussed if its an auto or manual really but I dont really want a cloth interior or tiny alloys on a big arched car like the superb so it has to be Elegance spec.

The 100 Anniversary is Elegance trim + a bit. Good luck getting a good one, I really like my 55 plate 2.5TDi Elegance.

A good buy at ~£9k?

A litttle bit more than I would be happy to spend TBH. £7k is my limit really.

You'll be needing an Elegance then, there's a few on Autotrader, no need to spend 7k if you don't mind one slightly older, 7k should buy you a 56 plate with 60k on it, if you don't mind an 04-55 you should find one for 4-6k

And on reflection, yeah that 100 is a bit top heavy isn't it, 7k is probably nearer the mark for it tbh.

Obviously the seller puts a few extra K on because they are relying on its special edition exclusivity. tut tut..

Ive noticed the PD140s are also more to tax, eventhough they have the DPF to reduce emissions. On that basis I wont get one for several reasons. 1. The DPF which saps performance and can cause poor running and doesnt appear to do its job anyway because the car produces more emissions than a 130 which doesnt have a DPF. 2nd, why pay more VED on a car which is supposed to be cleaner than the car it replaced and thirdly, theres no need for a DPF anyway, first thing I would remove when modifying the exhaust.

Could someone tell me the main differences between the facelift models to the non facelifts? Grill, headlights, dash and rear lights..is that it?

mp3 player..you still get the cd changer....inicator in lights.........led puddle lights ect

maybe diff alloys...all adds up

Theres a bit of spec I guess in the facelifts but Ive found an 04 Superb PD130 Elegance in light met blue, done 107k, full skoda service history, doesnt have the sat nav, has the 17'' 5 spokes and full black leather though, parking sensors, towbar, full MOT for £4250 just waiting for thier valuation on my Fab vRS to see how much they will give me for it before I finally decide.

Does it sound like a good deal or should I beat them down further?

Whilst the engines are good for twice that mileage if maintained well, the price seems a little high. At £4,250 you'd think that realistically they'd be willing to drop it to £4k at a push. Depends on the condition and service history.

Car prices are all over the show at the moment, rarely over the last year does a car go for the book price. This time of year cars often go below book price anyway, not a huge amount of cash around. Best bet is to look around at what else you'd get for the same money, then go back and check out the Superb again. It gives you an idea of what £4k can buy you.

Thanks for the advice, been looking around for last 2 weeks on the net and there are very few Superbs out there, and even fewer which are PD130 manuals in Elegance spec and so far £4250 is the cheapest Ive seen one at that spec. I dont know if its worth it to pay extra for an 05 model with the built in Satbav as thats all the 05 spec elegances seem to have over the 04s.

...I dont see many "modified" Superbs around. not that I intend on doing much but I think a slightly lowered Superb on 18'' BBS CHs or RSs, boot lip spoiler and a dual exit exhaust would look nice. Cant seem to see any non standard ones on the net though.

Have modified mine slightly by dropping the suspension, some alloys and other bits. Dumb stuff mostly like replacing boot lights, replacing the aerial and fitting a front splitter. The front splitter is a great addition though, easily done, cheap and does make a difference to the look of the car. Subtle but nice. There's a few pics if you click on my sig. Mine's nothing fancy but may give you an idea ... better still check out Baker21 on the forum.

As for price, you could check out a valuation <<HERE>> but Parkers don't update their site too often so prices aren't all too current. Also like I said before market prices and book prices don't really match up. Up to about 6 months ago everything was selling for roughly £1,000 less than the book price. At this time of year I'd expect to see much of the same ... although higher spec diesels tend to command better prices than petrols.

Good luck with it though man and have some fun car shopping. Drag the Mrs with you so she can experience what you go through when she's looking for new shoes.

No need to get excited about the GPS, it can be cumbersome to use. You probably would need an update disc and for the same price (here 140 euro) could buy a very nice garmin, tom tom etc. I too spent quite a while searching for a 130 elegance spec , keep at it one will turn up!!
