1.2 DSG economy

Looking through the new Yeti brochure yesterday I was surprised to see the official economy figures for the 1.2 tsi DSG are significantly worse than for the manual (combined 39.8 v 44.1). There is a very marked difference for the urban cycle: 29.4 v 37.2, oddly where a dsg is likely to be most benficial and perhaps where those choosing this engine/gearbox combo will spend a greater part of their driving

I can't help wondering if there is a mistake in these figures. The 7 speed dsg in combination with the 1.4 tsi in other VAG cars tends to offer broadly the same economy as the manual equivalents, with for example slight improvements in urban driving balancing small declines in extra-urban in the Octavia (which weighs about the same as the 1.2 Yeti).

I just checked the figures for the Golf 1.2 tsi and the urban figures are just 1mpg worse for the DSG compared to the manual, with extra-urban the same. i realise the official figures can be unreliable, but I'd expect them to be roughly consistently so!

Even allowing for the unreliability of the official figures, it does seem those quoted for the Yeti are possibly wrong

Well the Scoda brochures that I have seen do seem very poor with lots of ambiguities. I do not know if some of this is deliberate allowing a better image of some things or not, obviously not in your case with the DSG. It could be down to shoddy a translation services. In any case the literature is very poor comparatively in relation to other manufacturers.

Just reading up on DSG technology!

I have just been reading http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct-Shift_Gearbox which gives a very comprehensive report on the DSG. It includes a history, advantages and disadvantages as well as a comment on comparative fuel consumption of normal auto and manual boxes. It also mentions some of the system recalls around the globe. Well worth reading the whole article.

Extract of above

Advantages and disadvantages

Advantages

Better fuel economy[2][7] (up to 15% improvement) than conventional planetary geared automatic transmission (due to lower parasitic losses from oil churning)[5] and for some models with manual transmissions;[2]

No loss of torque transmission from the engine to the driving wheels during gear shifts;[2][4][5]

Extremely fast up-shift time of 8 milliseconds when shifting to a gear the alternate gear shaft has preselected;[3][4]

Very smooth gear-shift operations;[4][5]

Consistent shift time of 600 milliseconds, regardless of throttle or operational mode;[4]

Appeals to 'sporty[2] drivers' due to overall fast shifts and rapid responses,[2][5] along with the 'latest technology'

Disadvantages

Marginally worse overall mechanical efficiency compared to a conventional manual transmission, especially on wet-clutch variants (due to electronics and hydraulic systems);[5]

Expensive specialist transmission fluids/lubricants with dedicated additives are required, which need changing on a regular basis;[14]

Relatively expensive to manufacture,[citation needed] and therefore increases new vehicle purchase price;

Relatively lengthy shift time when shifting to a gear ratio which the transmission ECU did not anticipate (around 1100 ms, depending on the situation);[4][20]

Torque handling capability constraints perceive a limit on after-market engine tuning modifications (though many tuners and users have now greatly exceeded the official torque limits without any adverse effects);[citation needed]

Heavier than a comparable Getrag conventional manual transmission (75 kilograms (165 lb) vs. 47.5 kg (105 lb));

Greater potential for failure due to complexity.[citation needed]

Would be best advised waiting for an update to the on-line owners manual, the current one does not cover DSG performance figures as yet, although there is some operational stuff in there.

I am sorry Mr The Plumber but I can not open the link?

Unable to redirect to 'http://new.skoda-auto.com/COM/aid/errors/pages/500.aspx'

Is it just me?

thanks Anthony for the helpful summary.

i currently drive an Octavia 1.8tsi DSG and like the gearbox a lot. The only slight disadvantage I experience is that there is a small delay in selecting the appropriate gear in kickdown, so while the acceleration is pretty brisk, there can be a moment's hesitation before it is initiated. I expect this is because the system doesn't anticipate being suddenly "asked" to find a low gear when cruising at quite high speed in 7th, as suggestd in your summary.

I'm interested in the Yeti 1.2tsi as it's the kind of car my parents will consider for their next purchase, and having recently test driven the manual 1.2 ,I would certainly consider one myself when I'm next in the market for a new car.

Never min The Plumber, thank you for trying, I still could not connect even after abbreviating the http code. It looked as it was opening, then showed the same 500 code error and refused to redirect.

Try going to new.skoda-auto.com, this is Skoda CZ main site. Then look for the Service tab at the top of the page, this opens a new window with sub tabs. Select Documentation, opening another window which will include a list of Skoda models. Obviously select Yeti and you will get a list of applicable PDF documents.

Best of luck,

TP

Thank you again,

I have tried all of that. Later on, I shall try a different browser, I am currently using Apple Safari but will try Mozilla Firfox just in case their is some incompatibility.

Hi Anthony,

running Firefox myself so you should be OK with that.
