Company car tax - BIK real costs by model

Featured Replies

Hi Guys......I am looking to change my company car in June 2010 from an Octy2 Vrs Tdi Estate, to another Skoda.....perhaps another Octavia, a Yeti or maybe a Superb. Before choosing the model I ave been taking a look at exactly will come out of my monthly wage as Benefit in Kind (BIK) company car taxation.

The details below are for standard cars, with no added options (not even metalic paint!!).

All the cars listed are diesel.

Taxation is at the 40% rate on the full BIK value of the car plus fuel benefit.

Costs are with fuel benfit included.

Monthly, yearly and 3 yearly costs are based on actual money paid out of your wage per month!!

Cost/month Cost/year 3 Year Total

Superb Estate 140 Eleg DSG £363 £4,352 £13,056

Octavia Estate SE Man £233 £2,802 £8,406

Octavia Hatch SE Man £227 £2,730 £8,190

From the above there are a few things that leap out to me.

Firstly, the emissions of the car have the biggest effect on the BIK paid and the 140 engine with DSG shows this at it's worst the case scenario. Hence, sometimes a higher spec and higher value model may actually be cheaper to run for a company car owner. It also makes me ask the question...am I willing to pay an extra £50,£60,£70..per month....£2K, £3K over 3 years for a particular car???

Or looking at it in the opposite direction....I could save £2K, £3K over 3 years, to live with a slightly lesser model!!.........Food for thought and I hope the above helps others!

Regards,

Grobster

Why on earth would you take the fuel benefit option?

Pay your own fuel, and the figures will get much better.

It all depends how many private miles you do in the car! Personally I do about 17,000 private miles per year. Just simply crunching the numbers into the calculator, 17,000 div by 44mpg = 386 gallons of diesel, call it £5 a gallon, hence giving £1930/ year or £160/ month of diesel.

Using such as a Superb Elegence 170 Manual as an example.

BIK including fuel per month is £264.67

BIK without fuel is £146.37

Difference is £118.30.......£160 - £118 = £42 hence by taking the fuel benefit I am roughly £40 a month better off!!! or a total of £1440 better off over the 3 years that I will have the car.

Break even occurs at about 12,500 of private miles/year.

Totally agree on this, and the numbers also show why taking the Superb 170 was better than taking the 140.

My private mileage is significantly higher than my business mileage, I expect to do around 20K miles/year
