Damage advice - wheel bearing?

Featured Replies

Friend of mine hit a kerb with his N/S wheel in his Fabia vRS last night - It looks as though he's drifted into it sideways rather than hit it head on.

We've swapped the wheel for the spare as the alloy has a flat tyre. Jacked it up and giving everything a shake - all seems ok: the wheel is in the right place and I can't see anything that's bent. Looks like it may have a little bit of positive camber now though?

Infact, everything seems ok bar a loud, droaning noise when you get to about 20MPH+. Rekon it would be ok for him to drive for a couple of days?

It does sound like the wheel bearing is cream crackered. Driving the car will would be ok for a few miles but then the bearing would be come even worse and break up, possibly damaging the hub as well, advice is simple, change the bearing asap. As for the extra camber the strut or wishbone is bent and won't do the handling much good. Probably a more serious problem and more expensive to fix.

hi,

dont want to look like thread hijacking, but not sure if i have a similar problem. this morning, in the snow, my Fabia 1.2 Htp (03 plate) slid partially down the road and into a wall. there is a bit of damage to the front wing, but thats not my main concern. just by the wass is a short pavement and kerb, and i reakon i might have hit that with the nearside wheel. now i can drive the car ok, however when driving in a straight line the steering wheel is not in the 'straight ahead' position. to drive straight ahead, my steering wheel is approx 15 - 25 degrees offset clockwise. the only thing i notice is that every now & again, the steering wheel tries to pull to the left a little. there are no other noises, groans, creeks or anything else.

any idea's what this could be? i'm hoping for something simple like tracking or wheel alignment, but knowing my luck it's gonna be something a little more serious.

any advice / onformation would be appreciated.

kind regards

Thanks Soot1e - garage are going to take a look at it tomorrow morning. Fingers crossed it's just the wheel bearing that needs replacing!

Sounds like a bent track rod to me dave. Is the wheel sitting in the same position it was before... i.e not further towards the front or rear of the car? Can you go lock to lock without catching anything?

Might be just a case of a new track rod, track rod end and the tracking done.

Get the front suspension checked PDQ. Most likely bent wishbone, damper and track rod. Suspension isn't exactly over-engineered, and not designed to take load impacts from immovable objects.

thanks for the replies guys.

not noticed anything different with the position of the wheel, but only had a glancing look this morning when i got to work. haven't tried the full lock to lock yet either. car does still seem to drive well though.

anyway, cant really do anything until the weekend, but will just have to take things very easy, and only drive when essential.

cheers.

Does anyone know whether the wheel bearing itself can be replaced without replacing the hub?

Checked Eurocarparts and they only list the hub + bearing - see here.

One complete part.

Erm... Whilst it could be the bearing, it could also be somewhat nastier. I'd get it to a garage at the earliest opportunity for a check over at least.

*** UPDATE***

my car now in the garage, and it needs a new track rod arm & track rod end (well, i think that's what he said)

£100.00 the lot, fitted. sound a good deal? i think so, was expecting worse to be honest.

if that also includes the geo check/adjust, then that is a good price

keep me updated on if this fixes the problem, am having this on mine. Thanks
