Bigger Wheels, will I need to change anything else?

Featured Replies

My Octavia currently has 16" Vega wheels on, and after 130,000 miles they are in a right state (even the spare has been kerbed). So I was thinking about retiring them to be used for winter tyres and buying some 17" Zeniths for the rest of the time as they look much nicer.

Will I need to change any settings on the car, such as using VAGCOM for calibrating the speedo/etc, or will I need to alter the suspension settings at all, or anything else? Or is it as simple as swapping the wheels over? Will a 17" wheel fit in my spare wheel well, I assume it will?

So long as the rolling radius is the same you shouldn't have an issue.

theaspect ratio of your tyre is the only thing that requires changing. 225/45/R17 and your speedo should be fine

Ah good point, I will ask them about it before I buy the wheels as I will have to save up £1500 to do it. (5 new wheels, 5 new summer tyres, 5 new winter tyres)

I assume they will see it as a modifcation and want to charge me more, even though with winter tyres in the current conditions would make me less likely to make a claim.

The wheels are available as an option from Skoda and as they are Skoda wheels they may just say OK no extra charge......mine did anyway

So long as the old wheels are not heavily damaged would you be willing to sell them and if so how much would you want as is without tyres?

Also cars that come from the factory with 17 inch wheels have a 16 inch steel spare which is about 50 from a dealer. The 17 is just a bit too deep to fit without going into the boot space. Hth

Feel free to pm me if you like.

Thanks

Sorry I'm not interesting in selling them, I will be keeping them to put snow tyres on - that way I can just put them on in winter, and put the zeniths on for the other 3 seasons, no messing around having to go to a tyre fitter.

Well I have the false raised boot floor thing, so it shouldn't be a problem fitting then?

Why 5 new of everything?

You cant fit bigger than 16" in the spare wheel well!

If I had a puncture when using the new wheels I'm assuming it would be pretty dangerous to replace a 17 inch wheel with a 16 inch wheel that has a different tyre, or vice versa - putting a normal tyre on with 3 snow tyres, especially if they were fronts.
