Dis-embedding opened files with IE

Featured Replies

One of my biggest annoyances is when IE insists on opening a document (word, excel, powerpoint, acrobat...) inside a web window. You have no control over the file you open and it's a pain to have to save it first, close IE then open the file from HD with the application directly :(

I've found the option in Acrobat so pdf files are always opened in their seperate Acrobat Reader application.

How do you do it for Office files (word, excel, powerpoint, access, visio, project...) ?

The other reason I also hate it is that when you've finished with the file and click on the back button, it doesn't close the application and remove it from memory, eating up my precious limited ram on the laptop. :thumbdwn:

Help me please! :o

Slow there, Col - 6 minutes until the predictable anti Microsoft post

Not sure if this will work, but could be worth a shot...

Open up an explorer window, and go to "Tools" then "Folder Options".

Go to the Filet Types tag, and select the relevant document extension. Click on the "Advanced" button, then you should see a tick box which says "Browse in same window". I believe if you uncheck this then it will solve your problem...but I might be wrong.

Assumes you're running W2K or that XP is the same in this respect... ;)

Rob.

I can confirm XP has the same option. The tool-tip says "Specifies that you always want files of this type to open in the existing window instead of opening another window." Sounds right ...
