MFD2 automatic power-on intermittent

Featured Replies

I own an Octavia Estate 2.0 TDI from 2008, and the original owner had a MFD2 retrofitted.

Everything worked perfectly until a while ago, when the MFD2 wouldn't power up automatically when I turned on the ignition key.

Normally the MFD2 would power up if it had been on before the ignition was turned off, but now I have to push the power button manually.

The weird thing is that it will power up automatically if I turn off the ignition and then almost immediately turn the ignition on again.

If it sits in the car park while I'm at work - I need to power it up manually when I want to drive home.

So, the question is why do I experience this rather weird behaviour?

Maybe I should mention that I have a Webasto comfort heater installed, and it will run for approx. 30 minutes in the morning, and 30 minutes in the afternoon (before I drive off naturally).

Could the problem be that the Webasto sucks too much juice from my battery, and that somehow triggers the MFD2 to loose it's "memory" of it's power state?

I'm just speculating here, so please forgive me if I'm completely off :-)

I had these symptoms just before my battery gave up the ghost  it has been fine since I changed the battery. I could be wrong but assume it wouldn't turn on to conserve the battery power (i.e. the can-bus has seen the voltage as low)

How did you experience that your battery gave up - did it just die completely out of the blue, or did you experience slight trouble starting which got progressively worse?

It became progressively worse until it gave up one morning when the temperature was -4c! The new battery (a Bosch Silver) allows the car to start on the first crank almost straight away.
