Rear Fog Lights

Featured Replies

When a manufacturer puts a vehicle for testing and specification when first produced or imported, they can specify to the C& U people how they want the vehicle spec'ed, and as long as it meets the MINIMUM requirements, in this case "a high intensity rear fog light fitted to the off side of the vehicle" then that is fine. They would not consider the other side to be a "working light" even if it has got a red lense fitted. As far as C & U would be concerned the near side is a decorative bit of plastic, nothing more.

If you look at some Renaults they have a funny red bit in both rear lights, but one side has a red bulb and the other white. That is legal. I am also sure that some Jap stuff only has a bulb fitted on the off side only, even though there is a red "lense" opposite.

Anthony, be assured that VAG Group are abiding IN FULL with al the C & U Regs for the Yeti and all their other vehicles. If they weren't no-one could buy one in this country from a dealer as they couldn't be registered.

Just curious - why do people want to have two rear fog lights working, unless they travel abroad in the fog a lot?

My case is very simple - I have brought my Octy from Poland as I was planning to live there. But plans have changed and now I live UK, so I need to register my car here. And that means having switched other rear fog light on (and current off) or switching both on (which in my case in future might benefit me when I decide to come back to Poland).
Lots of manufacturers only fit a bulb one side, and that side depends on which country the car is going to be sold into. It's called saving money. It might only be 50p per car, but when you produce 250k cars that figure soon adds up.
This is why new Octys do not have rear fog lights as such at all.

Have been in the boot of my '99 Octy and can confirm there are no wires to the missing fog lamp on the near-side, therefore no prodding of computers is going to re-enable it, however, a piece of wire spliced into the off-side fog lamp would :)
