Many thanks itey & Tom much appreciated.

Just need a SMOC 110 4x4 owner to confirm or quash the CFHF theory.

Many thanks RP.

Still on the original 170 engine as of the end of the year then.

Edit

Also ask again, are there any TDI 140 owners who have a CFHC engine code as opposed to the CBDB.

Regards,

TP

My 140 4x4 was delivered mid December. I am not sure what week build it was. The engine code is CFHC. Just out of interest, I am only getting 37.9 mpg ( 2,800 miles, 50% motorway and no short trips) and a strange lag/braking effect when accelerating from over-run. I am fairly sure that this must be something to do with the engine management system.

Hi thanks for the info much appreciated.

Is the fuel figure a Maxidot reading or a fill to fill calculation? Factors that will obviously effect fuel consumption include speed, use of cruise control (can increase fuel consumption), regular braking or overtaking and driving style.

Currently running my monster with the smaller 16" winter tyres and my over-reading Maxidot fuel figure for a cross country run to work is often between 50 & 52mpg, travelling were possible at an over indicated 60 to 65mph (fitted with the CBDB 140 and 3800 miles; includes some over-read for tyres).

As to the lag/braking not noticed anything as such with mine, although I do get the odd sensation now and then that's she's missed a beat but this is much less than my two previous PD's which were forever doing it, particularly at motorway speeds. Only thing new I have noticed is a very slight vibration through the chassis which I have put down to the tyres and road surface, although diesels often transmit some engine vibration.

TP

The only power lag I notice is descending down one quite steep and windy hill ('windy' as in 'corners' [wine-dee] not 'windy' as in 'wind blowing'...) when I put the power back on and it feels like the stability system is holding back the power. I think someone mentioned the other day about 'turbo lag' but I don't think it's this. I never noticed it on the Fabia vRS on the same road. It may be a power off against gravity/inertia and pick up, not sure.

Hi TP,

The figure is a Maxidot reading but is very similar to the fill to fill figure I got over the 1st 1500 miles.

The engine actually died on me this morning - again after an over-run "hiccup". I think I put the clutch in at the exact moment of the "lag". I'm taking it into the dealer on Friday for a diagnostic test so I'll let you know if they come up with anything but I don't hold out much hope! The guy in the service department didn't seem to have much clue as to whether there had been any changes to the Bosche engine management system or if there had been any similar problems.

The strange thing about the fuel consumption figure is that it seems to be no worse on the odd urban journey than on long runs. In other words - it's almost impossible to do a cross country trip at say 60-65 mph and get more than 40 mpg. I would have expected to get the 50mpg you are getting.

Haven't noticed any chassis vibration so you're probably right about the tyres.

Overall I'm really pleased with it but the mpg and the hiccup are annoying niggles.

Regards,

PTK

PS Rubber trim round the driver's door has pulled free (top right hand corner) - looks as tho' it must push into a "popper" which has gone missing.

Hi,

hope the dealer can find an answer to this issue for you. Regard the ECU yes this was upgraded with the engine change; info provided by JonA who works on them over in Norway (thanks) as follows "The second gen. engines will use a new engine mangement system which is called Bosch EDC 17-C46. The first generation engines had a Bosch EDC 17-C14 engine management system2

Took a photo of my fuel reading tonight, 37 mile cross country A road drive with about 5 miles of duel carriageway and a fairly steep hill climb onto the Wolds. PS remember this is an over-reading due to my smaller winter tyres, so I think realistically high 40's.

Hi TP,

Just got back from the dealers. 50 mile round trip, mostly dual carriageway but some rural. I think I am going crackers! Maxidot reading on the way there showed the usual 37mpg for the 25 miles. They did the diagnostic test and couldn't find anything (took about 40 minutes) then took it on a short test run and said they got 46mpg. Drove home in it and on the same 25 mile trip as going at roughly the same speeds, I got 45.2mpg - an increase of about 20%! I have no explanation for this and I can't come up with one - especially as I am not a subscriber to conspiracy theory and they showed me the test print out! They were very kind and concerned and did not suggest care n the community as a solution. Have you got any ideas or should I be trying to find a care home ?

Regards,

PTK.

PS - noticed on the way home that the outside temp gauge is stuck on 3.5 degrees. Had the same problem with the Golf - they seem to get damp in them and start working again when they dry out.

Going -starting with cold engine.

Returning -starting with warm engine.
