Yeti vs Golf Plus

Featured Replies

Hi

I currently run an Octavia estate but in the next year or so will probably be changing.

The 1.2 Yeti is a hot candidate as self and even more ancient mother-in-law do have the odd problem getting in and out of the Octavia.

(Brilliant once in)

Golf Plus was much better in this respect than Octavia (not otherwise and too expensive).

Keen to know how more senior Snow Monster owners with dodgy legs, stiff backs etc get on.

Thanks in anticipation fellas...

I've transported aged parents in my SM a couple of times and they find it okay getting in and out - large amount of leg room in the back helps for swinging legs in (although the rear doors are quite a bit shorter than the front) as well as the relatively high seats compared with a 'normal' motor making life easier.

It was the main reason I changed, and im very happy with it!

Hi,

don't fall in to the category's listed quite yet but working on it

I personally think you will find the Monster will fulfil your requirements very nicely, having both a raised ride height and seating position. For comparison the Octy Scout has the raised ride height but not the seating. The seats themselves are comfortable with a reasonably flat seat base (no Sport Seat stiffened side bolsters) so you can swivel your body round to step out.

Best thing though would be to find a local demo to try out.

TP

You must be wearing extremely well TP for a WWII Bomber Crew. :envy:

I do not have the mobility problem as yet - but it is getting there, so the easy in and out of the Monster was also a consideration for my choice.

I do so agree. I hate climbing out of these low cars. I have run 4x4s for 17 years and the high seating position is just the job. I can see over the hedges, into peoples front gardens, down drivers necks in open top cars. It all adds to the joy of modern motoring. And I am not intimidated by the large bus and lorry wheels towering above the poor car drivers!

Hum, Hum?? Are you sure you meant necks?? :giggle:

I know what goes on up in Gog Land in the summer!! :smirk:

When I changed cars 2 years or so ago, I actively considered the Golf Plus. But while it's more expensive new than the normal Golf, it depreciated faster. The Roomster is the obvious Skoda competitor to the Golf Plus - in fact the total cargo space is quite a bit more - and that's what I got. Worth looking at IMHO.

Valid point, but the Roomster is smaller internally that the Octavia/Yeti and the seating position is not particularly higher than the Octavia. Testament to this is that the wheelbase and track on the Yeti is identical to Octavia (Yeti actually has a wider rear track) whereas Roomster is more akin to the smaller Fabia.

Compared to the Octavia you certainly go 'up' to sit in a Yeti and the seats and driving position are really pretty comfortable IMHO.

Golf Plus? Nah - don't do it. Its just a non-descript pumped up golf with no character and heavy depreciation (was more expensive than a Golf on launch and is now IIRC correctly cheaper; that says it all). Get the Yeti and, having just driven one for a couple of days, the 1.2TSI engine is a stonker. If you wait a while you might even get the 122bhp version in Yeti.

Well, I'm an old - No late middle-aged - git who has a stiff back, and it's dead easy on the access side. I think that you would find the ability to slide the back seats back to create more legroom an asset when getting in & out.

Have also discovered that if you use the adjuster on the the steering wheel, by pulling the column further out, you get a full view of the instruments.

Also was staggered its hill climbing ability today - it shot up a steep road I use often about twice as fast as the Volvo I have just parted company with. In fact keeping within the speed limits is proving slightly problematical.

Except the Roomster has a longer wheelbase than Octavia or Yeti, which is why it's more spacious front-to-back for passengers than either of them.

Eek!

I didn't believe this as owning both an Octavia and Roomster I'm sure the Octavia's 'cabin' is bigger; certainly the seats are more generous and there is more shoulder room; Roomster's width (less door mirrors is 1684mm, Octavia's width is 1769mm and Yeti is 1793mm but having checked the brochure;

Roomster wheelbase - 2617mm Octavia & Yeti wheelbase - 2578mm; Roomster wins and I stand corrected.

Thanks to all of you for your replies - most encouraging ;)

I will test drive a 1.2 dsg as soon as a local dealer gets a demo one - some time in April I gather.

(Then its merely a matter of finding the pennies wih redundancy looming as a result of £340 million cutbacks in Further Education spending. :( )

I said the Roomster was larger "front to back" ('cos the wheelbase is longer than the Octy's) not in terms of width.

Stuart

The Yeti is based on the much more expensive Tiguan. On paper the Yeti 1.2 is a bargain.
