Picked up Anthracite FL TDI VRS est. manual yestreday

Just a few extras: Sunset, Silver Rails + Curtain Airbags*

Gotta say it looks nicer than I thought it would, even from the photos I've seen

on 'looking for anthracite VRS pics' threads, kinda compact and Chunky looking

and those 18" Alloys with the dark glass look plain menacing!

Saw a few new 3series and the like and,on M1 & for me the Skoda is way better looking, and more space, faster, cheaper (17.7) etc.

Shifted an absolute mountain of gear from Brighton to Midlands ealier plus a bike and dropped my folks up to heathrow with 2x 25 kg

bags.....easily, no need for tactical loading-just bunged it in.

Dealer said they have ordered their demo vrs in anthracite after seeing my one.

Told me to keep below 2500rpm for a 1000 miles and then build it up.

Sensible or too cautious?

Audio system not too bad either.

I would say its cautious but if you can be patient then its all good. Be sure to post pics!

Thanks for steer on that Mark, will grab a decent camera from work and try and get some good ones on Brighton Seafront.

Just bought a 2GB SD card from Asda for £7 and bunged a load of tunes on it for the car,

didn't even realise it had SD slot until dealer pointed it out....bonus!

What about top speed while I'm running it in?

What about top speed while I'm running it in?

Well, that will be defined by how fast it will go in top gear at 2500rpm

I thought the manual said 3000rpm, not 2,500, but I'd have to check. My dealer just said drive it normally, don't let the engine labour, don't tow with it and keep it below 3000rpm for 1000 miles then gently increase the rev range over the next 500 miles.

It tells you in your manual how to run the car in.

Upto 1000km (621 miles):

  • Do not drive faster than 3/4 of the maximum speed of the gear in use, that is 3/4 of the maximum permissible engine speed.
  • Do not use full throttle.
  • Avoid high engine revolutions.
  • Do not tow a trailer.

From 1 000 up to 1 500 kilometres (621 to 932 miles)

  • Increase the power output of the engine gradually up to the full speed of the gear engaged, that is up to the maximum permissible engine revolutions.

During the first operating hours the engine has higher internal friction than later until all of the moving parts have harmonized. The driving style which you adopt during the first approx.1 500 kilometres plays a decisive part in the success of running in your vehicle.

You should not drive at unnecessarily high engine revolutions even after the running-in period is complete. The maximum permissible engine speed is marked by the beginning of the red zone on the scale of the revolutions counter. Shift up into the next higher gear on a vehicle fitted with manual gearbox before the red zone is reached. Extremely high engine revolutions are automatically governed, by the way.

For a vehicle fitted with a manual gearbox the converse situation also applies: Do not drive at engine revolutions which are too low. Shift down as soon as the engine is no longer running smoothly.

Caution

All the speed and engine revolution figures apply only when the engine is at its normal operating temperature. Never rev up an engine which is cold, neither when the vehicle is stationary nor when driving in individual gears.

Last time I had a new car they said similar, not to labour it, and no thrashing. But straight up to normal speeds.

Thanks All, for taking time out to reply to this topic, I know how to break the car in now!

TsvRS - I took some photos down at Shoreham Harbour (nearest quiet place by the sea I could think of)

Car was a bit dusty and rainsmudged, but I kinda like unfinished cars anyway.

Sunset doesn't show up that well in pics, but it does go well with Anthracite and Silver Rails,

The car looks great in all colours but I'm stoked with Anthracite, you won't be disapointed.

Sainsburys have a 4GB SDHC Micro Card for £8.99 Class 4 - and its black.

I'll ave some of that, played it safe when I bought it and got only SD as I didn't know if HC worked.

Gonna get a bunch of them, give em to my mates to put stuff on and fill up the cigarette compartment,

and treat them a bit like old style 8 tracks!

Edited by stuardo

Hi Stuardo that car of yours looks the dogs bolxxks but I would say that as I have the same combination as you have and they look great.

Regards mate

Yep I quite like that - our 4x4 estate is Anthracite but pre-FL so has black roof rails - your silver ones look like they give the car a bit of a "lift" to me - just not sure how hard wearing they'll be.

Nice photos thanks and yes I am now certain I hit upon a good colour combo - looks very tidy with a bit of dual personality, can be conservative but still a bit of a snarl. Real Q-car. I think the roof rails are stainless so I am hoping they last just as well as the plastic coated ones.if not better.

The car looks well, enjoy :)

Just had another look - still love it.

Hate waiting . . .

Excellent choice Stuardo, looks just like mine emoticon-0148-yes.gif

The silver roof rails make all the difference - set if off superbly. I hadn't seen one in that colour with them on when I ordered mine, and just hoped it would look good, and I certainly was not disappointed!

I find that anthracite doesn't show up the muck too much either, which is a bonus in the recent weather.

Bob.

Great looking car, I do love the vRS Estates, especially with the FL front. Excellent choice!

Thanks All, for the positive comments on the car.

Hope they don't keep you waiting too long (tSVrs) - FYI I had build week 51 in 2009 and It was at the garage 12th Jan.

Still have not seen another Fl VRS of any type, and I drive up and down the country every week-end but I will laugh when I do,

esp. an Anthracite estate!

Yep, great looking car, congrats!

Also the piccies brings back memories, as when I was a kid (35 years or so ago!) my Grandparents lived in Shoreham and went there on holiday most years :D .

That's cool! - photos would have been a bit more dramatic with the old power station there, remember?

You could drive (ride my bike) on the dock side under the huge cranes.

There are loads of the old type concrete speed bumps down there now which is a shame,

as that was the best place around Brighton to do drag racing type silliness, loads of surfers now though.

Yep remember the old power station, but mostly remember the area near the footbridge over the river towards the airport!

The estate looks fantastic in anthracite, I was going to order red or white, now may pay extra and go for anthracite.

I do like all the colours but I can foresee Anthracite being easy to live with, it's caked with smears, dust and mud,

and I just noticed Branston Pickle on the running board and it still looks presentable. The colour

makes it seem more compact and chunky to me, saw a race blue FL hatch on London Road Leicester earlier though and that was real nice. My dealer said they sell 7 out of 10 in race blue before anthracite was an option, which quite a few people are getting now, but in terms of exclusivity - all VRS's are Fl, 1 and 2! That blue one was the first FL I have ever seen and I drive all over the SE and Midlands. I kinda like the red in the hatch and the white one with a sunroof looks awesome but could you live with it? Photos do not do justice to any FL though. In pictures the way side panel from the rear door to the boot looks a little flat and shapeless but in the flesh it looks actually quite slick. Hope it comes quick whatever you decide!

SDHC works fine (it even says so in the owners manual :-) ). I have a 16GB in my Bolero.

That looks great - lovely colour, really suits it.

Just looking at our pre-FL Octy 4x4 estate out of the window - really is very handsome side on. Going to miss it, we are trading it for a Yeti, really has been an outstanding car. Must admit many years ago I was a badge snob and never saw myself owning a Skoda....but now I'm a convert. Skoda really DO make drivers happy. B)
