Restoring polycarbonate headlight lenses

Featured Replies

Mornin' all,

Has anybody attempted to restore dull/discoloured polycarbonate headlight lenses? I initially thought the staining on mine was on the inside, but on closer inspection it would appear that it's more the outside which is the problem.

I've seen restoration kits on ebay, but are they any good? I don't have a rotary polisher so the options are either to ask a resident detailer to have a go (anyone? :) ) or to use a kit which doesn't require any special equipment.

Does anyone have experience in this area?

Cheers,

Yes,

I had some slight marks on my lens so tried some "Intensive Glass Cutter" from Halfords (Item code: 7987736). Its a 250ml blue bottle and comes with a cloth. I think it was about £5.

The liquid feels a bit like "T Cut" but not so rough, I spent about half a hour polishing each polycarbonate lens using a circular motion and they are now clear.

Worth a try.

I can recommend Meguiars PlastX for this - cracking results previously.

Hi all I've had a go at cleaning up one of my head lights as the cars on a 53 so nothing to lose really, garage said £650 ish to replace one headlight and wasn't going to pay that( had one done as someone crash into me leavening one cloudy and one clear). Now I will say it's borked for me so don't try and sue me! First I cleaned the headlight with soapy water dried it, taped the car up so I wouldn't scratch it, I used a very fine wire wool then brasso it took me about an hour but looks a lot better, still not as good as the new one but close I've used polish too. Sorry I don't have a photo to back this up

I'm very happy with the out come of this but I was bored and had a couple of hour free to have a mess about. Hope this help anyone out.

I did mine today. Used a DA with 1500paper then used a fine cut polish on the mop to finish. Looks much better now.

Not a bad plan, although I am too scared to use a machine with sandpaper attached so I do all the wet and dry by hand, using a small rubber eraser as a block to evenly spread out the force of the sanding.  Had some good results on the mercedes I am currently borrowing from my mate whilst the mongrel is in for serious repairs.

Not absolute A1, but then this only took half an hour.
