Rome

Went to Rome last week, utterly magnificent. Everywhere you look would make a great picture. It really was amazing. I'm no photographer but I've put a few up here:

Its going to place like this that would make me want to learn the little bit more about photography and use some better kit but here's a few I liked:

You should, so many things are awesome in its truest sense. The scale and granduer of so many of the attractions is unbelievable. I wouldn't go overboard about the Sistine Chapel but St Peter's Basilica was jaw-dropping, breath-takingly immense.

Very nice. Wouldn't mind a visit there myself.

As above, the scale, the architecture, the richness of the decoration - if you like taking this style of photo then you won't be disappointed. Don't make the mistake of not taking your battery charger (I thought 300 shots would be enough, its not) so I don't have many pictures of the vatican museum - The corridor with the maps on the wall and the Raphael rooms were outstanding but only got video not photos (you can't take photos in the Sistine chapel anyway). Not got many St Peter's inside photos either as my wife was photographer and I had the video but you would need a tripod to do it justice - the ones we have are not as crisp as they should be.

So I strongly recommend a tripod if you can. I didn't (hand luggage only) but so many grand inside pictures and outside at night photos I wanted to take. Somewhere like the Pantheon is not lit inside. I didn't have one so I had to make do with whatever surface I could rest the camera on. Not quite got the framing right (like picture #5) but it couldn't be helped and I'd rather get the richness of the pictures with something in the way than a shaky picture. 2s timer for night photos FTW.

I know my photos are technically poor but I hope you get the idea of what I've seen and thought "I want to capture that".

At one point we were walking down a side street and one of the cafes had patio heaters bellowing out warm air and the buildings in the distance were "shimmering" through the heat haze. I tried a few times but just couldn't catch the moment properly. Ho hum, probably expecting too much.

SWMBO and I went there on our honeymoon. As above, the Sistine chapel was amazing, but overhyped in my opinion. St. Peter's was breathtaking, especially if you climb the winding narrow stairs all the way to the top! Definately worth a visit! Nice pics by the way.

Good effort! On the battery front, I can't recommend highly enough getting a camera that uses AAs, or at least on that supports a convertor for them. Without that capability, I would have missed this:

I suppose a couple of battery packs and a desktop charger would do almost as well...

Back on-topic, lovely pics! :)

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks that. Didn't go to the top, swmbo doesn't like that sort of thing (won't do london eye, eiffel tower etc)

I took a risk based on how many pictures I know the camera will take but it soon became clear that it wouldn't be enough at the rate we were snapping away so they got rationed a bit - like back when you knew you only had 24 on a roll of film  Still had enough juice to take some pics at the airport on the way back though. Silly really as I was only trying to save packing the battery charger and it's only very small.

The other problem I found was that often you would be so close to something and it was so grand that you couldn't get it in shot. So lots of stuff you can actually see you can't capture.

Not quite what I meant :p

Nice photos.

Rome is fantastic. I love it. The people, the atmosphere, the food.

In fact apart from spending a month there with work, I often go and have my hot-air ballooning holidays in Rome, so combine the best of both. It's fantastic :)

We arranged a night glow by the Colloseum. It hadn't been done in something like 20 years and was a real special moment.

I'd go back in a heartbeat :D
