vRS - PD vs CR

Featured Replies

I imagine that this topic has probably been done to death elsewhere on the forum...

I have finally decided to get off the fence and buy a vRS diesel (yay), however because I'm looking at spending about £12-14k it's in the ballpark for PD and CR diesels. Apart from 1g/km of CO2 (and the mighty £30 per year that saves on VED - wow), is there much of a difference between the two engines?

Opinions welcome!

If you are looking at tuning, the Commonrail has a few more options to go for bigger power, but the cost will be higher as its quite a new thing in the VAG scene. The PD has more tried and tested methods.

PM me if you need a bit more info and I will pass it on to my bro, he knows loads about this stuff.

Cheers

There are lots of other threads on this if you search.

Biggest differences are that the CR is so much more refined and more linear in its power delivery. Although on paper there seems to be little in it with the economy, in practice most people get better MPG out of the CR.

After owning both, IMHO, CR is definitely the way to go. Have a drive of both, see what you think - your budget should get you into a CR.

I would avoid the PD if possible, the CR is more refined, less prone to particulate filter problems and the 2.0TDI PD engine in general is known to suffer with cylinder head problems. I would opt for the latest technology (CR) every time.

PD = noisy tractor

CR = smooth operator

If you can run to it, go for a CR - it's a no brainer IMO :thumbup:

Sounds like cr is the way to go, thought so. Thanks for confirming my beliefs!

I used to have a VRS with PD engine (56 plate) and now i got a vrs le with CR .... i can tell u .... is much better, more quiet and i think looks like a bit quicker ... but is same power as Skoda said :)

Hehe driven both and have the PD and whilst it's definitely a bit nosier, it is hardly the difference between a diesel and a petrol. You can still very clearly tell that the CR is a diesel both inside and out :D

CR that I saw in the same price range for me had 4 times the mileage so the no-brainer for me was the PD :)
