EPC light comes on and stays on

Featured Replies

Hello all.

We have an MOT tomorrow. We have a Skoda Fabia Y reg (think it is 2000 or 2001).

The last 2 times we have driven the EPC light has come on and stayed on. Will this fail our MOT and if so, what is it exactly and how do we get it fixed?

Many thanks!

Don't know, but it does suggest that you may have problems with the emissions test.

MOT fail

If it's a spurious fault, you might get away with leaving switching the ignition so all the lights on the dash are on but the engine's not running, and leaving it like that for five minutes or so. It might be voodoo, but it worked on my wife's car once. Funny things, spurious faults!

You might be able to find a member near you with VAG-COM, who can read the fault code and clear it. However, given that time is against you in terms of arranging a meeting and/or getting a VAG-COM cable or fault code reader of your own by mail order, you may wish to consider one of these:

They're not especially good value for money to be honest, though. OTOH, it's about the same price as a scan from a dealer.

However you go about it, a fault code scan won't fix the problem of course, so unless you are able to determine that it's spurious, there's a chance it may re-appear in the MoT test station! :( But at least you'll know what needs fixing, so you could always book the car in to be fixed and then MOT-ed...

Thanks for replies. Have cancelled the MOT and we are taking it to a Skoda service station for diagnosis tomorrow. They said it could cost anything from £70 to several hundred to determine the cause :(
