Flashing glow plug light mystery....

Featured Replies

Right I will try to keep this short and sweet!

Basically I was a tool, and caused a short circuit whilst trying to get the damn boot light out. No problem, however it was dark, so I took the 10amp fuse from the rear wiper, and swapped them over for the time being. However today when I drove the car, the glow plug light started to flash. A quick journey over to my mechanic who quickly noticed that my brake lights were not working, a quick scan with VAGCOM showed that there was a fault with the brake switch. However when we replaced the rear wiper fuse with a new one, the brake lights started to work!!

He scanned it again, and it still showed the fault and the glow plug light was still flashing. He then said that the switch has two parts, and even though one half was letting the lights illuminate, the other half going to the ECU maybe faulty, so he is going to order me one on Monday morning.

As soon as I drive away from the garage, about 100 yards down the road the glow plug light stops flashing, and the brake lights continue to work as normal

Question is - was it all part of me messing about with the fuses that caused the car to throw a wobbly, or is it likely that the switch has gone? It just seems strange to me that the light has extinguished - should it still be flashing if there was a fault?

Hopefully someone may have a clue, to save me having a new switch fitted.

Thanks!

I'd put it down to "one of those things" Could be you caused an indirect wobbly with the central convenience ecu, but if it's working now I would just :) :) and not touch it again. :D

The brake light switches are known to be dodgy, so I'd replace it personally.

My glow plug light also flashes, upon a visit to a local dealer he asked "does the car still start?" I replied "yes", he said "then there's nothing to worry about"

Agreed

Time to find another dealer me thinks ,

ideally one who knows what he's talking about this time.

probly just got a bit upset about the fuse being pulled, they like to see a brake signal once the car is moving so you may find the fault has cleared now
