Columbus and syncing with new phone

Featured Replies

My 6 year old Nokia 6310i sync’d perfectly with my Apple Mac and the Skoda’s Columbus, when I bought the Superb 170Elegance last March. I have now replaced the phone with a Nokia E71 - again easily sync’d with the Apple and the Columbus, during which it uploaded my current 400 or so contacts. The strange thing is that the identifying name that appears on the MFD cockpit display still says “Nokia6310iBrian” which was the identity I gave to the old phone, yet the new phone has a different identity, which doesn’t show on the display. Can anyone suggest what’s gone wrong and how to correct please. Of course it’s not really important and I can stick with the old name being displayed but it’s nice to get things ‘right’.

The technical handbook on the Columbus doesn't seem to deal with using mobile phones in any real detail. A pity.

Have you tried updating the address book in the "Phone" menu section on the MFD? Worth a try, I think, as it will probably to a "re-load" which might include the SIM identifier.

Thanks , yes done that and no difference. I am pretty sure the name that appears on the MFD is nothing that is recorded in the SIM - this is the name that is set for bluetooth identification purposes. This name appears when syncing with both my IMac and the Superb, but the old phone name still stays on the MFD!

You need to delete the profile using the MFD and then add the new name, I had the same when I switched phones as it seems to recognise the SIM rather than the phone's bluetooth name

Have you all tried this as it worked from me when the phone and car went out of sync recently.

Ensure your phone has the RSAP capability "ticked".

Away from the car remove the phone battery without switching off the phone. Reinstall the battery.

Go back to car and then if nessacary follow the procedure I posted at:

Worked for me.

Thanks Ernie, that has solved the issue. Drilled down via MFD; Bluetooth; User, Select old name; delete and it was gone. Then pair again with new phone and this time it picked up the new name. Perhaps we should write a better version of the Columbus manual.

Thanks, all is working OK except when I get in the car, the car searches and recognises the Nokia e71, but won't connect till the e71 confirms that it will accept the connection, so I have to unlock the keypad, (two simultaneous key presses) and press the main nav key to say Yes. My old Nokia just accepted the request itself so I just got in the car and that was that. I suspect this should be a phone setting adjustment but have searched everywhere to no avail. May have to post the question on the Nokia forum site!

thanks anyway

You need to enable remote access on the phone should be in the connectivity menu

Go to bluetooth setup screen on the E71, and then press right on the D-pad to take you into the 'Paired devices' screen.

You should see a 'Skoda_rSAP' entry. Select it, and then press the 'Options' button. One of the menu options will be 'Set as authorised'. Click on it.

You should then be asked if you are sure you want to do this. Just say yes. The phone will now 'trust' the car, and can automatically connect with you having to mess about with the phone.

Hope that helps,

Bagpuss.

Thank you very much - that solves the problem. My little, poor e71 manual doesn't list that right press on the D-pad - so you have opened up another screen! I bet there are more waiting to be discovered. Interestingly, my other paired device, my IMac is there as well and it's already set to automatically authorise. That certainly happens without me intervening. Somehow the macs ISync software must have sorted that out in its initial set up - it wasn't me!!!

Well done indeed Bagpuss. I can now fly to Hong Kong on Thursday (combined work and holiday) without puzzling about this anymore

Just glad to be able to help. I've just upgraded my E71 to an E72 and have to say that it's an improvement in pretty much every way. There are still a few niggles, especially the way it handles WiFi/3G/GPRS switching. The iPhone just works out what the best available connection is, and gets on with it. Sadly, Symbian still don't seem to have worked this out. Oh well, maybe Symbian 4 will fix this.........

But an iPhone will not work with the GSM III unit in the Superb, but it will work fine with the GSM II in the Yeti!!!!! Great phone, but I may have to stick with a parrot hands free, even though the car has one built in Grrrrrr!!!!!

Apple have finally acknowledged the bug that I logged on this, promptly closed it, and pointed me at another bug number, which indicates that they are working on it.

From what I'm told, there is a possibility that firmware 4.0 for the iPhone will introduce rSAP support. This will only be for 3G and 3GS models, though. Still, that would be better than nothing.
