Fuggin potholes

Featured Replies

From your description, I'd have thought the most likely suspension/tyre damage would be to the tyre walls or wall plies, not bent links.

You could be right.

Tracking doesn't equal alignment so it could still be something there. Or Tyre damage as you suggest. Visually the tyre looks fine, but only from one side I suppose.

I might pop the wheel off and have a proper look tonight. It might be worth sticking the spare on and driving a few miles to see if that makes a difference.

First couple of months I had Furby ,I had two nearside tyres bulge -( these were origonal Skoda fits) - commented by tyre place as one particular road .Changed to betttter rated ( though cheaper) and since then ( touch wood) ,not had any more problems.

I've hit a pothole at a reasonable pace before which caused it to start pulling to one side, and it didn't affect the tracking/geometry - it had, however, buckled the wheel ever so slightly. This was only visibly noticeable when it was spinning on the wheel balancer when the replacement tyre was fitted.

Rob.

One around my way has been turned into a friggin speed hump!

Honestly it must be stood proud (level) by about 2-3cm's!

Have to say though the winter spell we've had has given them a battering and i've seen some filled in. Although not alot of care has been given in doing so.

Suppose its better than the one i hit out by Holmfirth, that one even made the gf jump!

Completely.

While southampton council have filled a large number of potholes i go through every day, theres a couple of patches that are coming back already.

I tried the spare on passenger front but no difference.

It's in for it's 30k (2nd variable) today anyway and the off centre steering is to be looked at. Fingers crossed I don't get a massive bill.

Roads are definitely continuing to get worse. I've seen nothing get fixed yet.

Got the car back very quickly.

And the damage after all that worrying about knackered wishbones or bent alloys..............a little note that said, steering wheel straightened.

I thought steering wheels were on splines to stop that? Never mind, fixed now.

Steering feels a lot firmer now, I wonder if something was a little loose? It might just be me coming off the Roomster courtesy car. The steering was a fair bit lighter on that.

£150 for a 30k service, not too bad, I was expecting worse but then not much was needing done. It was a change of oil and brake fluid mostly.

Maybe it's just my nasty, suspicious mind, but I'm wondering if the rack has moved in its mounts.

Loose in the mounts? I was thinking the other day that the steering was a little odd and I was having to correct it a lot more, or there was a bit too much freeplay in the steering. But not enough for me to be certain I wasn't just seeing/feeling things that weren't there.

I can only describe it as the car feeling like new again. But it's maybe just a placebo effect.

The roads around Glasgow are trashed

More sort of "slid through them slightly"; it's about the only thing I know that keeps the geometry correct, and misaligns the straight ahead.

Overall, I have spotted as many as usual.

But that said, on some particular roads round here (Harrow, NW London), where damage has occurred, the detrioration has been rapid. One road which I use on my way to and from work is now like the Somme. There's a combination of small diameter deep potholes in the tarmac, which penetrate the concrete below and large diameter shallow potholes in which large areas of the surface tarmac has just disappeared. - these are real suspension grounders. You have to take serious avoiding action when driving over it - even more fun at night. Yes, and it is one of the roads, or part of it, that hasn't been properly reurfaced in 30 years (Being apolitical, County surveyors reported the start of the decline in proper road maintenance in the UK as soon as MHT came to power in 1980). Paraphrasing MHT, there's only so much money in the national cake, and if you spend the last 30 years friitering it away on financial and commodity speculation, unnecessary foreign wars, idiot celebrities and footballers, shiny dresses and LCD Tvs, and getting perpetually ****ed there won't be a lot left to do much else.

And this is in quite a smart residential area. I think this particular damage has occurred because this road traverses the crest of a slight hill i.e. the road surface is slightly convex down its length and the surface tarmac is put under slightly more tension under freezing conditions. Repeated Freeze/thaw has made all the previous temporary repairs pop-out and created a whole new lot of damage.

I reported it, and a number of others on the local council's web-site over a week ago, they have a form form for reporting potholes and road damage, . Nothing, still the same -despite being on a major bus route and adjacent to a well-attended church ! The road used to be well-maintained because a councillor lived there. Not now - must have moved !

I don't know whether the council are holding fire because they expect further cold weather. But, the least you'd expect is for the inspector to visit the site and mark-up the road, or, more appropriately, close it off until they can get temporary repairs done.

But not to worry, went to report some more that I spotted along the same section of road. And guess what, the report form on the web-site had been rendered unserviceable (very New Libore)

I suppose that these local authorities work on the basis that its cheaper to defer any road repair expenditure to the last minute and expose the authority to the possibility of a pay out on a few motivated motorists injury and damage claims. Personally, I think that most of these LAs are so top heavy with administration (Councils never you to have directorates !) and are simultaneously being squeezed so tigthly by HM Treasury that they've only got the funds to pay the wage bill - providing any services is out of the question !

You'd have thought, in this day and age, there would be a quickcheap temporary filler (a-la dentist) , perhaps a hosed-on quick-setting expoy gel or foam, that could be applied at least to provide a driveable surface and prevent further detrioration until proper repairs could be done. Thinking about, didn't the Swedes devise something like this some years ago ?

Oh ! Its already over here !

http://www.roadpatching.co.uk/

I'd quite happily pay a further £2-3 on my roadtax each year to avoid this annual event - as long as the funds were ring-fenced for the purpose - being one, I don't trust the rest of those bureaucrats.

Of course, that improvement in the quality of life would all be conditional on the extra expenditure fitting in to Gordon's macro economic spending plans(teehee).

"Our" council have actually said that they won't be fixing potholes until it's a bit warmer.

I went down a pot hole around the end of Jan, 5 inches deep, blew both passenger side tyres instantly and knocked the tracking out. i had a full set of new tyres a month before, so ive put a claim in to the council. lucking had my camera in th car so I took loads of pics. in the 3 hours i was waiting arounf doe the RAC it got 12 other cars with punctures, a merc went down it and it had its headlight shaken out by the force and an alfa brera cut its fuel supply off as the jolt was so intense, it thought it had been in a crash! it just trundled to a stop in the middle of the road!

It is disgraceful, isn't it ?

The national income/economy is twice as big as when I was a kid 40 years ago, and the roads are at least twice as bad. I thought economic growth meant things improved over time ?

Of course all the moneys going to providing our brave boys the expense defrauders who run the redundant Parliament and their city of london mates with the excessive and de-bauched lifestyles which they think they deserve .

Oh, and that reminds me. I just happen to have a spare £8 billion in my back pocket this month (Beer money's a bit down) and I thought I'd take a punt against a weak currency ! Anybody ?

Economic management and distortion of national priorities care of Alice . . . . .

Hi All

My ST220 hit a HUGE pothole in Essex about two weeks ago - immediately lost all pressure in front n/s side. Limped to services at M11 J8 and changing wheel for space saver spare noticed it was completely deformed. So, £330, new wheel and new tyre. Driving the car up to Norwich twp days later, I could feel it wasn't driving right. Get to destination, rear tyre flat as a pancake. Arranged for etyres to replace tyre, only to find that rear wheel also deformed. So, another £330.......

Reported pot hole to Essex CC and dorve past the pothole site on Friday - pothole now filled in - all 2 metres of it!

As others have said in this thread, I would happily pay a bit more road tax IF the money was ring fenced for road repairs. Not likely to happen though!

Glen
