Help - ordered 1.6CR, dealer trying to deliver 1.9TDI

Featured Replies

I'm due to pick up my new Octavia on Saturday, but received a call from the salesman today. It seems that when they were registering the car the VIN came up that itwas a 1.9 TDI, not the 1.6 CR as ordered.

Obviously the 1.6 has better fuel economy and lower tax and, as a 20k pa commuter, this all makes a difference.

The dealer has offered to knock £500 off (not much as the 1.9 is £375 cheaper anyway). I'm planning to keep the car for 5 years and have worked out that the difference in price, tax and fuel over the 5 years comes to £1,915.

Has anyone heard of this type of thing before (I can't understand how Skoda just dropped the wrong engine in!) and what sort of deal should I be looking for to accept the car?

Cheers!

I would get them to check it really is a 1.9TDi and not 1.6CR, in case there has been an error in the paperwork somewhere (surely the engine must look different, so they can tell which one it has??). I would also double check your own order paperwork to make sure it says 1.6 on there.

If the paperwork is all in order and it is really is a 1.9, personally I would refuse to accept the car as it wasn't what I ordered.

No way you should accept it for just a £500 discount. Get another one ordered.

If i ordered a 1.6CR then I would only accept a 1.6CR and not a 1.9PD unless they offered me a silly discount, like 2grand or more, and even then I'm not sure... The CR engine is so much more refined..

There was another thread on here a few weeks back where the wrong engine had been delivered, think that was a petrol VRs instead of the diesel... How often does thing sort of thing actually happen?

I wouldn't accept the car. Its not just the fuel saving, its the superior refinement and the main reason is, its not what you ordered.

Probably a surplus of 1.9TDIs or could be a genuine **** up, either way don't take the 1.9 no matter what discount they offer, its like accepting a Nokia 5110 instead of an iPhone in terms of technological advancement :giggle:

The common rail gubbins under the cover will give it away - if you know what to look for.

well my situation was similar in 2008 even thou audi delivered my R8 in a different colour i ordered white with lava grey sideblades

it was lava grey with silver sideblades

i said no thankyou and they re-ordered in an emergency build slot and gave me £1500 discount (unheard of with a new R8 at that time)

my original R8 took 18 months to arrive , the new one took 2 month to build

JUST SAY NO..............................................................................................................

That was me!

They actually took delivery of the petrol one and didn't realise until I saw it. They re-ordered a diesel, but I had to wait for another eight weeks :'(

The dealer held the part ex price on my old car, and I got a three year servicing deal on the car, plus a couple of hundred quid off the price, and I got the car that I wanted

I am sure that the 1.6 will be a better car, will save you money on the cost of ownership and will be worth more when you come to sell it. I would want the 1.6 and compensation.

You order and buy a brand new car because you have selected something you want and desire.

The price of doing this is quite high in that with a new car you in effect pay for that with high initial depreciation.

You of course have the option of steering clear of this initial expense (depreciation) of taking a nearly new car but then you do not have the luxury of having the exact spec you want, you make compromises in engine colour etc.

I personally would not accept a 1.9TDi. Its on its way out, its noisy, more tax but is a proven reliable unit.

Having driven several 1.9's over the years they perform OK but are unrefined and noisy.

My wife's Focus 1.6TDCi is a modern common rail engine and we get up to 57mpg on a run. Even she had to admit it is quieter than she thought a diesel would be.

Obviously I do not know the full facts of your order but I would guess that the dealer ordered the wrong car.

You could check by getting the comms number(order no.) off the dealer then ringing Skoda UK and ask them what was ordered.

I kept track of my new car by ringing the dealer or SUK every week

No way would I take it. I want what I order and pay for. Definately get them to get you what you wanted.

I find this incredible, you mean the dealer did not check what came off the car delivery transporter, it was not checked in the PDI, the salesman did not check what was being delivered to the customer.

It was only an external operation (DVLA) that highlighted the problem.

Scandalous

Ridiculous

Terrible

You have plans to keep your car for 5 years, wait a few more weeks for the right car.

I t will always niggle you when in the future new owners of the 1.6CR write up on this forum what a great engine it is

Try to get as big a discount as you can but do not despair about the car offered . You are legally entitled to reject the car as it is not the car you ordered (breach of contract).

I have recently bought a MK6 Golf 1.6TDI and find performance & economy are significantly worse than advertised. My wife has just ordered a 1.9TDI Octavia after test drives by both of us .The 1.9TDI has much more low speed torque than the 1.6 and in the real world I find the 1.9TDI more economical (Based on my previous MK4 Golf 1.9 TDI & daughters MK5 Golf 1.9TDI ) . The 1.6 has to rev quite a bit more than the 1.9 to achieve a similar power output. I personaly think the 1.6 engine is all about emissions rather than economy. It is often the case that a larger engine with more torque is more economical than a smaller engine. Also the 1.9 TDI has been developed and refined over the years and the 1.6TDI is still a new design- it has electronically controlled turbocharger !

Test drive a 1.6TDI Golf for comparison. Good luck.

Take the 1.9 but get some more off the price. I have a 1.9 Octavia and my wife the new Golf with the 1.6 tdi engine. The Golf has no guts compared to the 1.9 Octavia. The Golf is poor at lower revs and not as economical as Octavia. You might be paying less road tax but it costs in drive quality.

Is the 1.9PD more run in than the 1.6CR? If so you need to compare them at similar mileage. A new diesel is as tight as f**k for at least the first 10k.

Modern CR engines are engineered to give a flatter torque curve making them more flexible through the revs. PD engines are well known for big peaks of torque low down and no puff at the top, especially the 8 valve variety.

Oh how my heart bleeds … ;)

How about test driving the 1.9 and see what you think? If its acceptable to you start haggling!!! :)
