Cambelt

Featured Replies

Hi all

I am going to look at a Octavia VRS in the morning, it has 94 k on the clock with full history, i did ask the question "has the cambelt been changed" he told me that The cam belt has not been changed - skoda suggests replacement @ 120,000 miles, which i found to be rather late, i take it this is not true?

Thanks

That is the official skoda interval, but when you consider how much damage a cambelt does when it snaps, it makes real sense to change it sooner. I think most people tend to stick with 60k miles or 4 years, whichever comes sooner.

Also, if it is an older vRS, the water pump is prone to failure, and should be replaced with the newer metal version. It is driven by the cambelt, so is usually replaced at the same time. Just check that when you are driving it that the temp guage is OK. It should get up to exactly 90, and stay there. If it goes higher when you are driving quite hard, then the water pump is failing.

I just had mine done last week. Mine is a 2005 octavia with 56k on the clock. I thought it would be better to be safe than sorry. Cost me £340 quid all in including a new water pump.

Cheers,

Got the car today and it turns out the cambet was done about 6 months ago, have all the paper work ect to back this up so thats good!!

Do you know if the water pump was changed when the belt was done. plastic water pump impellers tend to fall apart, and best changed when belt done.As correctly said above new interval appears to be 60k or 4 years.
