Estate tailgate inner trim removal

Featured Replies

Hi folks, I have a 2001 Y Reg Octavia TDI estate. There is a slight dent in the tailgate to the left side as you face it at the side of the number plate, which I am sure will easily knock out, and wonder how to remove the inner plastic trim which is the width of the tail gate itself.(this is below the glass). I can't see any screws etc to get access to it and and don't wish to force it either in case the plastic breaks.

Hi there,

The trim is normally just push fit which is quite firm to remove, Just pull each end equally to avoid breaking the plastic lugs. .

I think someone posted on here recently about an estate

Start by gently pulling a "bottom" (in closed position) corner away, and increase force until it "clicks" out. Repeat at intervals along the bottom edge, then up both sides until it comes away.

What will be a right PITA is replacing it (DAMHIKT)!! What you need is a helper who can reach the open tailgate, and is prepared to stand with their arms above their heads for 15 minutes. Replace one side, and insert the helper to support the weight of that side. Now refasten the other clips, starting with the other top corner where it clips over the window side trim.

thanks for everyone who responded and shall have a go at the weekend however seems rather fiddly and will try to be careful however we shall see!!!!

When it comes to re-assembly, it can help it tie a bit of string through the slot in the trim for the fabric grab handle and tie it onto the handle. That way there is one less thing for the multitude of hands needed to get it back together to have to hold.
