MFD3 is a satnav unit.

valid point though...the FL Bolero system could easily be mistaken for a sat nav unit, peering through a car window :(

I don't know why skoda don't offer that film that goes on the inside of the windows that stops anyone getting in that way, the glass may break but they cannot gain entry

Wondering here if factory fitted units are more at risk as they have the roof mount antenna - bit of a give away really!

Does that not have bad implications were you to be involved in a road traffic incident and the emergency services couldn't open the doors?

In that case don't they just cut the roof off?

Takes a bit longer than smashing the window and if I needed oxygen or assistance I'd rather have it in seconds rather than have to wait for specialist cutting equipment to arrive ;)

This has always been in the back of my mind (as I always take my cars to have Pentagon Supaglass fitted when new) but apparently the fire services are geared up for it and it isnt a problem to them. Sort of begs the question as to why the thiefs cant use the same method to get round it though. :S

Ebay, profiting from sales of fakes, stolen goods, and from income tax dodgers since 1995!

I don't know if it would stop this sort of theft (as they spot and grab), but as people are mentioning film on the windows, thought it worth mentioning you can get glass alarm sensors. They listen out for a specific metal hitting glass frequency and can can be quite sensitive.

I have seen a car window with film protection smashed up and on the road in one big piece so that kind of suggests the thieves can get through them.

That may have been kicked or pushed out from the inside as thats how they appear.

I think the alarm idea means a whole new alarm system - I used to have these features on an aftermarket Clifford alarm but couldnt find any add on module for the factory system.

Nothing can stop outright a thief, all they do is slow them down. And you need to be making a lot of noise and a lot of time to get through the protected glass

Hope my standard Bolero won't be mistaken for a full blown SatNav !

ITTech, really sorry for the loss and especially the damage.

I have put a curse of Biblical proportions on the perps, they will suffer.

No. Skoda and VAG in general aren't doing enough. Replacement motherboards and tools to extract the PIN code are available from certain people on a well known VAG navi forum.

Surely one of the best things Skoda & VAG could do is stop charging so much for these units...

It's no wonder they are being stolen and sold on eBay, the demand will be very high considering new ones are over a grand!!!

I want to eventually put an MFD3 in my Octavia, but it will HAVE to be a second hand unit for me to be able to afford it.

Stuck in traffic this morning, I was wondering how to make my Columbus more secure. As a result I'm now considering getting the VIN engraved under the screen (registration would be good but it's a private plate that will be tranfered one the car is sold)...

Unfortunately I think the scrotes would only realise when it is too late, and it would end up in a hedge. :( Unless it ended up being VERY conspicuous which would ruin aesthetics quite a bit...

Like your thinking though.

Yeah, waste of time sadly. They wouldn't notice till it was too late.

My father used to be in the fire service, they had a solution to this that involved 50p worth of commonly available bits from your local DIY store, worked a treat every time.....proved that the protective glass film is nigh on useless! if it can be pushed out from inside it can be pulled from outside!

On the subject of the MFD Serial number-

The pouch with all the docs that come with the car has a manual for the Radio , My fabia had a small card with it, it had rhe radio code along with SN, model no etc,

Doesnt this come with the Octy ?

I have just checked my Fiat Folder & I have a card for the radio that has model no, Serial No & code.

VAG stopped issuing codes on cards late 2006.

VAG know full well where the radios are installed, and could easily block any reported as stolen or end up in another vehicle. There must be a reason why they choose not to.

My Columbus code was supplied as a print out from VAG online dealer system.

It is very effective at stopping the chancers, but I'm guessing it involved hammering something through the glass, opening up some claws, smash the glass then pull it out.

Laminated side glass (A La Citroen) would certainly help along with not charging stupid money for the systems or breaking them up into parts.

Main display is the same for all, then a buried GPS unit which just uses the display etc etc.

I was just about to put the one I have up for sale, but I guess now would be a bad time!

Sorry to hear of your woes.

tried to pm yom but your pm's not takein any mail ?

You can buy new facias on ebay for £80 so it would still be worth stealing your just lowering their profit whilst ruining your sat nav.

They can replace the mainboards, remove blocks etc etc.

The best deterent is the buyer. Target disabling their cheap sat nav, and suddenly you remove the market.
