Smoke when cold starting ?

Featured Replies

I test drove an L&K Octavia estate today and noticed that when it was started from cold it produced quite alot of white smoke from the exhaust. I asked the dealer who stated this is normal for Skoda and VAG cars until they warm up, usually about 10 to 20 mins, there will always be smoke.

Is this true ?

Cheers,

Paul

If it helps, its an 07 L&K estate. Dealer seemed genuine, but if its not normal then what is the likely cause ?

Or is this a likely explanation ?

on a cold day you may see what appears to be white smoke from the exhaust that will disappear after the vehicles engine has warmed up to it's normal operating temp.. This is a normal reaction called condensation... condensation is the result of a small amount of water/dew being drawn into the exhaust usually collecting in the muffler and/or the catalytic converter and is caused by our friend mother nature..... like when you see your breath on a cold day...

Get him to start a couple more & see if they do it & you can compare the colour of the cloud.. Condensation will be white, looks like steam & evaporates into the air once away from the car & is nothing to worry abaout. You must have seen loads of cars doing it on frosty mornings.

Smoke will be grey to blue & will smell of oil or diesel depending on the source, if its this then tell the salesman hes a con merchant, walk away & post the name of the company on here.

If in any doubt & you want to buy the car get a good mechanic or the AA / RAC to inspect it, not a Mate who thinks he knows
