Linux on iSeries?

Featured Replies

We are about to get a new 570 machine in a few weeks, Big Blue are giving us a free extra processor so we can have a linux partition. Don't know why as no one here knows anything about linux!

Anyone had any experience of Linux on an iSeries?

Did the iSeries used to be the AS/400?

If it is, I've used an iSeries, and Linux. But never one on the other.

Once you've got it installed though, any Linux info you find should be valid, regardless of platform.

Try www.linuxdoc.org as a good starter.

Hoping to get you some information on this today; not forgotten just need to cross that persons path.

You'll soon learn about linux, it's quicker than a FQ thing on the 400 :D Once installed as Jimo said; like any other install.

Used to be called the AS/400, now the iSeries. Operating system was called OS/400 and this week I think its called i5.

I wondered what IBM were branding it as this 1/4.

Brings back (not so) fond memories of my COBOL and RPG days, but looks like things have changed a little in recent years

It's great :thumbdwn:

I can't stand doing the old mainframe stuff but it's linking into a new system I'm developing with a nice wireless mobile front end.

The mainframe is due to be replaced soon so the COBOL stuff is only to keep things going for a few months.

We used to use a product called CODA, I think that was written in COBOL.

Not personally, but if you need any specific questions answered, give me a shout and I'll see if I can find out the answers as I have a few AS/400 (sorry I-series ;)) contacts on the inside :D

We support our product on z-Series, Unix, Linux and Windows platforms. Amazing how many customers are using mainframes and the marketing quote that the average z-Series server is down for 5 minutes a year, usually just for routine maintenance! Still, can't beat a machine you can see, kick and do some damage to, so I'm a Unix/Windows man myself :D
