Yeti Derivative for Audi?

Featured Replies

Danish FDM (equivalent to AA in britain) in their February magazine Motor released pics of the new A3 and expectations of the Q3 to compete with BMW X1 and expected mercedes B class SUV.

Any guesses as to whether this will be be a first for the VAG? Designing an Audi on the base of a Skoda?

Wanna bet it will be less boxy and have a longer boot?

Isn't that the Q5? It's based on the Tiguan, which the Yeti is based on?

Didn't think the Yeti was based on the Tiguan. Thought it was mostly Octavia.

Mind you most of the VAG cars are based on the same platform so it's a bit academic.

Nope, a new Q3.

And the Yeti is not based on the Tiguan, but on a mix between an Ocatvia front platform with a Golf 6 or 7 (?) bootbottom, and the rear axle close to an Audi TT as I understand it.

Same as a Tiguan then? Possibly?

Don't think so - but close. The Tig must have a longer platform. Maybe Golf 7 in place of 6 or summat.

My point is... the Yeti, Tiguan, Q5 and X1 are roughly the same size...

Yes, depending on how rough roughly is. I beleve the Tig is about 400 mm longer - like the Octy - and it is mostly in the boot and back seat. The Q5 is quite a bit bigger.

Both the Yeti and Tiguan share the same general platform PQ35 but this is modular, so the Yeti as I understand it from JonA is Octavia 4x4 from the engine to the rear seats and Golf V 4motion at the back.

Having owned a Golf 4motion there is a remarkable similarity in boot floors. If I remember rightly the toolbox on the Yeti housed electronics possibly for the Haldex 2 on the Golf. The boot area on the Tiguan is much longer and I don't remember seeing any similarity with my Golf, when I was considering one last year.

Having driven Octavia II's in both 2 and 4 wheel drive including the Scout, the Yeti from my point of view anyway appears to have more in common my Golf 4motion in the way it drives and handles but much advanced. You could I suppose say a natural successor. :)

i'm 99% sure that a Q5 doesn't share a platform with a Tiguan.

The Audi Q5 is a compact crossover SUV which was released by German automaker Audi for the 2009 model year.[1] It is built using the new Audi MLP platform (Modular Longitudinal Platform) which debuted in the 2007 Audi A5 coupé. The Q5 is the second Audi model in the "Q" range, after the full-size Q7. The Q5 slots above the future Q3, which will be based on the Volkswagen Tiguan.

wikipedia knows

I wouldn't take anything Wikipedia says for granted.

But regardless of platform sharing, they're essentially the same sort of size.

i've test drove a Tiguan and Q5. I think Wikipedia is right on this occassion and the Q5 is based on an A5 platform. The Q5 interior and boot space was much bigger. Its weird from a distance they do look similiar in size i admit. But they are defo different vehicles entirely.

I would put the Audi Q5 in the same size bracket as the BMW X3, it is much larger than the Yeti. The new Q3 when it is out will be most likely a similar size to the Yeti.
