Sat Nav problem

Featured Replies

Hi

I've got a 2006 Skoda Octavia Laurin&Klement TDi which I absolutely love. I have one problem with it which is the sat nav. The car didn't originally come with the sat nav so the previous owner purchased a genuine Skoda sat nav unit and had it installed by skoda. The GPS antenna is mounted on the dash. The problem I have is when you start the car in the morning it takes up to 15-20 mins for the unit to read the CD. Sometimes it can be quicker but normally it takes longer. It's really annoying because you can't use the sat nav facility as it displays "NO NAVI CD". Once it reads the CD it displays "DEST ENTRY ACTIVE" and it works fine from that point on. The Sat Nav CD is not a genuine Skoda but a Blaupunkt disc, could this be the problem? Once the unit reads the CD it works fine and never plays up. Anyone else have this problem?

By the way my unit is the MFD2.

Hi, quick update

I did a copy of the Tele atlas 2007/2008 TMC and tried it in the unit, still doesn't work, can take up to 20 mins for it to say "Dest entry active" to allow me to use the sat nav. I'm now wondering if the lens needs cleaning, I'm thinking of purchasing a cd lens cleaner, can anyone recommend a good one? The unit plays audio cd's fine which so I can't understand why it takes ages to read the sat nav disc.

I really don't think it would be a good idea to use one of those laser lens cleaning discs that have a small brush stuck to the playing surface in a slot-loading drive... :S

Its most likely the same greyish coloured film of crap that you get on the inside of the windscreen covering the lens. I used a boggo lens cleaner and it helped the situation. DON'T use any chemical based cleaner as the lens is polycarbonate or similar. I know this as I later tried a solvent cleaner and it actually melted the lens, result - one useless MFD2 unit. I replaced it with a Columbus unit and it was the best £700 I spent

Thanks for the replies, from what you guys have said I don't think I'll take the risk using a cleaner. I'm still not 100% sure the lens needs cleaning as the unit plays cd's fine. The only other way I will know is to buy a new disc but from what I've seen they are about £130 which is alot of money if the unit turns out to be faulty. I have seen a teleatlas 2005 dx on ebay buy it now price of £25 which might be worth trying. Is it possible my current disc is faulty and the files have been corrupted hence why when I copied it to a brand new cd it still didn't work?

They work fine, I have used one in a Stream, and also my old octys Audience headunit. In my case it meant that I could play CDs once again which had previously played with a scratchy sound.

Quick update.

I managed to find a brand new Blaupunkt Teleatlas CD on ebay cheap. It arrived yesterday and it works perfectly. The unit works within 10 seconds of it being switched on, RESULT:). Downside the disc is a 2005 and lacks the TMC function but I never really liked the TMC as it was always unreliable and out of date.

I just thought I would let everyone know the outcome incase anyone else ever has the same problem in the future.

Cool, at least it turned out to be the disk rather than the nav unit itself.
