plenum chamber grommets...

Featured Replies

Well, after finding out about the plenum chamber/pollen filter issue about two years ago it's been a job for next weekend - every week since! I've kept an eye on it by feeling the bottom of the plenum chamber through the flap over the battery and there's never been any water there, so the job kept getting put off. About ten days ago water was detected though, and by this weekend was an inch deep - so I'm glad it was sunny and dry on Saturday! :sun:

Did the job of removing the rubber grommets by following the guide that's been published on the forum several times, and all went well  - but it has left me with a couple of questions and one slight problem:

First - no way on earth could I do any more than get a couple of fingers to reach the offside grommet under the brake servo :swear: , which was well and truly clogged. The gunge made it extremely slippy too, so the best I could do was eventually to push it through the hole. Even that was not easy, given the limited access, as it appeared to be fouling on a (brake?) pipe that also passed through the hole.

Question - is the fact that the grommet is now out of the hole but suspended just below it, a cause for any form of concern? I doubt it but thought I'd ask.

Secondly - does anyone know of any mods to clear the area between the nearside bonnet hinge and the pollen filter, so that it will not get so gunged up there, and water will run more freely?

Thirdly - I've read on the forum that the radio code should be picked up automatically from somewhere or other. It didn't, but luckily I had the code. Can someone confirm under what circumstances the radio will pick the code up, or what I should have done for it to happen? - or whether I'm talking a complete load of rubbish.

Forthly (my longest ever post now) - coming through the car park barrier this morning, I noticed my window wouldn't go back up on one-touch - I had to hold the button til the window was shut :S . Is this connected to the battery having been disconnected? If so, should I have done something to prevent it? Is it a fix that can be done via VagCom? Are there likely to be any other little surprises in store for me?

Finally (at last) - a word of warning to anyone wanting to remove the battery for any reason. If you have a dodgy back, or want to avoid getting one, enlist the aid of a helper for 20 seconds. One of you to take most of the weight and the other to steer it into position. I took it out myself - and can still feel it slightly - but got my son to take the load putting it back and it was sooo much easier (of course it was, he took the weight of it while I steered... that's what teenage offspring are for! - should have used his smaller hands to reach for that grommet... )

cheers guys

The brake pipe aso passes through this grommet, so you either have to cut the grommet off the pipe, or do as we both did and push it down well clear.

Remove the pollen filter housing and give it a good clean, i then polished it so hopefully the muck will not stick as easily.

The car should remember the code, mine ALWAYS has - that was until the last time, when for no reason at all it 'forgot' the code emoticon-0106-crying.gif

This is just because the battery has been removed, to reset it IIRC you hold the button up (maybe down?) until the window closes, about a second later you will hear a click, let go and the one touch will have reset itself, unless it's like mine where the drivers window will not do 'one touch' any more (not sure if it ever did, the passenger side however is fine)

very odd... when I was leaving the car park to go home last night, the one-touch operation worked fine and has done this morning too. Wierd
