should the brake fluid have been changed at 18 months when bought ? ?

Featured Replies

i bought my fabia last April when it was 18 months old and had 12,000 miles on the clock. i wanted a quote for a service from my dealer and they said £250 which included new brake fluid which has to be changed every 2 years.

wouldn't it be best if the brake fluid have been changed before i picked the car up instead of me paying for it now ?

(i got a quote from a ex skoda dealer for £138 for a service and change of brake fluid)

Er, the car had not reached 2 years, so why would you expect it to

have been changed? Pay up and move on with life :)

Why would a dealer change something (and foot the bill) before the recommended time?

This way they save the cost of the fluid and gain the labour charge.

Hi James, no...don't worry about the brake fluid change not being done at 12K and 18months. I agree with the guys...that's way early and not needed. It confuses the service interval if you start messing with it too much. The cost of having it done is not very great either. Get it done when she goes in next for her service. Although if you are a low mileage user and you haven't hit 20K, and if your brakes are ok, they may suggest you go another year before it's done...it's not a super critical thing. The £250 you were quoted is way over the top to include the brake fluid service. Relax...enjoy your car.

i got a quote from a VW dealer and they said they would do the service and brake fluid change for £150 compared to the skoda dealer £250.i always thought VW was expensive.i'll also be getting a loan car.

it always pay's to shop around !!

James, that's pretty good. But most Skoda dealers are now quoting the same as the VW dealer. Worth getting another Skoda quote as many dealers are now adhering more precisely to the manufacturers requirements since quite a few of us made a fuss about service charges and found out some dealers were going over the top on the stuff they were doing at service times. Skoda looked into it and advised the dealers accordingly.

My car is due for 2nd service. The first service was just oil change according to history book. Do they change brake fluid or optional? I'm aware that my parent's cars have never had a brake fluid change with no problems at all even though it is recommended. Is it really neccessary, will it invalidate warranty if I don't or cause any problems?

Youll invalidate the warranty on any brake problems, and if you never have it done, your brake system will corrode, plus there's a chance of the fluid boiling when you put a lot of starin on the brakes, which means no brakes.

For what it costs (about 30-40quid IIRC) it just isn't worth not doing it.

well i went to a skoda dealers for a quote for the 2nd service and i asked if it included brake fluid change. they said no and it would be extra.

that means for people who don't ask and just go ahead with a service from the dealers thinking that it would not invalidate the warranty then their warranty would be made invalid!

No, they would probably tell you but it's your responsibility to ensure that it's done. The differences your seeing here is terms of the service costs look like they are services with and without inspections which are not vital every 10k service but must be done every 12 months. Adds a lot of labour ot the cost.

I got a free brake fluid change on my Toyota some time back, as a way of them trying to get me back for servicing.... May be worth asking for it if you are having a major service, saying you may use another dealer. At Toyota, the brake fluid change price is around the 60 quid mark so worth the saving! It costs them next to nothing anyway..... the techy is there doing yous service, He drains and fills the fluid in 15 mins, giving the system a visual once over for safery. The fluid is quite inexpensive in bulk so the profit is great! If you have to pay, go back a month later, they will have to book it in, ramp it, do the job and usually, at main dealers, give the car a wash/vac. That will be two free washes and a handful of free cups of coffee! Plus a nosey around the new cars.

They just included it in the price anyway.

What does the service schedule in the manual say? Just follow that and you've got no worries about warranty. I deffo wouldn't be paying £250 for a service with brake fluid change though. They're having a bubble

just got back from the VW dealer where my nearly 3 year old 1.2 fabia was serviced and brake fluid changed.all done for £150 , £100 less then my skoda dealer. I was given a new Polo 1.2 as a loan car for free (have to pay £10 at skoda dealer).

As the VW dealer is only 5 minutes drive away and in a nicer area i think i'll be using that as my garage now !

That's great James. Let us know in due course how you get on taking a Skoda to a VW dealer eg. standard of service, costs, updates provided etc. Good on ya!
