Busy day for lots of us by the looks of things :D

Featured Replies

I have had a busy one today trying to rectify some leaks and running rough when cold. A bit of history first though, I replaced the crank breather pipes not long after getting the car with the Y and bottom hose set from Eurojet Racing and at the same time I used a piece of silicone fuel hose to replace the small line from the manifold to the PCV valve (I had to widen out the one end as the original pipe goes from 1/4 at the manifold to 3/8 at the valve). This setup did solve a lot of the running issues I had and when I did the Suction Jet Pump it was as good as it gets.

Lately though I seem to boosting a bit less? So tried looking for leaks but not able to find any, the crappy O-ring seal on the turbo to pancake pipe is deleted and all the clamps are T-bolts and nice and tight. I have looked at maybe the injector seals could do with replacing as there is a bit of oily buildup around them and the FPR as well but nothing much. HOWEVER the silicone fuel line that I used previously seemed to look a bit oily but not like it was blowing onto it from elsewhere? It appears like the pipe is weeping oil? Looks like 21psi peaks can force oil through silicone?

So I decided to buy a proper replacement pipe from VW (£14 :( ) and I also got a metal check valve from Ebay as trying to find a good supplier in the UK is tough.

This is the one I bought

I have added this into the line so there are now 2 check valves protecting the PCV system from boost.

Don't worry I did put another clamp on as well :p

I did briefly check the PCV Valve and it seems to be sealing OK but they are known to be a weak point and the sludge that was coming out of it was disgusting (really need to get a catch can done soon).

While I had the metal tray off I checked all the other little pipes and there was one (in the pic above next to the PCV thats disconnected) that looked rough so I changed that at the same time, I really must get round to deleting some more of the cr4p in this car :D

Thinking of entering it in the "Most Cluttered Engine Bay" or "Dirtiest Engine Bay" At Castle Coombe if I get a job before then :D

It could win "Dirtiest Car" as well but no pic of that just yet.

PIKEY ALERT:

Once I finished all that plumbing and put it back together I got all Pikey again and tried something with the airbox. I had already definned and was looking at fitting a larger snorkel and even bought some 40mm extending aluminium ducting but as I have the ECU for the LPG in the space they used for the r32 style one it was too big. So I tried a pikey mod using cable conduit and glands ( a lot smaller than the aluminium stuff so lots of options to route to the front. No pictures of this as time was getting on but I drilled four holes in the lower part of the base to the size of the glands. Pushed them in with some good lengths of piping attached and then put the nut on the inside of the box (at this point my airbox looked like Doctor Oct with half his legs missing :D) I should have put them a bit more bunched together toward the back of the box as there are some clearance issues with two of them over the engine mount but a bit of gentle persuasion and it went in. One of the pipes is routed under the battery, one comes up the back of the airbox and around the side and down over the lpg ECU and the other two come up over the tip and then across betweenthe battery and the airbox and down behind the LPG ECU. So they all end up in the same area behind the headlight. Like I said, a proper pikey mod but not had a chance to really do any logs so not sure if it made a difference yet, BUT it is louder, MUCH louder, which was not the result i wanted as I prefer stealth mods although same noise as a CAI for £5 and a bit of time.

I also tried putting an N spec DV in as well but not sure if it will be staying or go back to the 007 as I am not sure if this contibuted to the noise as well or not?

I will get a pic or two up if anyone is interested.

Busy day!

That's even more cluttered than standard :o

Puts a bigger smile :D on my face though when I go to fill up

Edit:

I do need to get on with deleting some more stuff though, got an interview on Tuesday so fingers crossed as when I get back to work properly I need to do the downpipe and possibly decat? not sure how it will be on the LPG for emissions without the CAT so I may get the fabricator to do a cat dropout :D

why do you keep taking things away from the engine or deleting as you say do they run better with these out.

You say Its the dirtiest engine, but I have a nice part polished Inlet manifold up for grabs In the for sale section that will brighten things up when finished off ;)

VW put loads of failsafe systems and things to improve emmisions and it is all these extra systems that cause leaks, some of them can be simplified a lot and they still work . Plus some of them weigh a bit. :D HTH

Car no longer qualifies for the dirtiest as I actually washed and polished yesterday (first attempt with a mechanical buffer as well) :p
