Dirty Yeti

Featured Replies

I can't believe how easily dirty this car gets.

No problem with the roof and bonnet but the back door and sides seem to attract dirt like no other car I have owned.

Must be efficient aerodynamics for the dirt not to be washed away.

Hi Tom,

having to wash mine every week at the moment, just one trip out in foul weather is enough to make her look like she's been on a rally course.

Me thinks it's the wide open wheel bays, although my previous Golf was pretty bad as well; slightly improved with mud flaps.

Regards,

TP

Any decent SUV should be dirty ;)

I think is the current weather conditions any car is going to look bad and attract the dirt. Salt/grit mud, rain etc.

I doo agree the rear of the car is not so good - as you get you hands dirty every time you open the boot. Maybe a bit of a wing/lip over the top of the boot would create enough to take the

muck off the rear - we'll see what Skoda come up with in the future perhaps.

The worst problem is the back door and window. It was covered in salt spray after a mile of motoring on dry roads. (the salt comes up as a dust) The Skoda mudflaps are next to useless in this weather, the sides get caked in mud and the corners of the rear bumper are clagged up also. Fortunately the capuccino colour masks the worst.

At the moment I am jet washing twice and filling the wash bottle once a week. I know the weather is against keeping a clean car but the back window is the worst I have come across. Just as well that the wash/wipe is so good but I do miss the continuous wipe on the back.

Roll on summer!

I wonder how many tons of salt have been sprayed on our roads this winter and what effect does it have on the environment when the rain washes it off the roads into the surrounding countryside?

I wonder if a large slab of conveyor belt rubber was attached to the rear bumper and hung down low might stop a lot of the spray being blown up over the rear end and also if some sort of foil or wing attached to the rear top, overhanging the window might also help.

Contrary to popular belief, I've found my Candy White (Tibetan White to TP...) to stay perfectly clean....

Okay, perhaps a small Candy White lie but it has to be said that from a few yards away (a yard is similar to the new fangled metre for the youngsters on the Forum), the bright white does shine through.

Any vehicle with a vertical tail won't stay clean for long - especially those with a short overhang. I had a smart and that covered itself in dirt at the backend if it so much as saw a cloud (even in the dark).

My SM has been cleaned every week and it is actually a pretty easy thing to clean and dry - well apart from the steps needed to reach the roof - I haven't plucked up courage to open the splendid panoramic sunroof and stand on the leather seats to clean the roof from inside.... emoticon-0124-worried.gif

Do not stand on the seats what ever you do. If you must, place some 18mm ply across the seats and stand on that. I tell folk off for kneeling on my seats even in the cars that are getting on a bit because it is the fastest way to ruin them.

You should drive it around a bit!! Leaving it all shiny and new looking in your drive won't even run it in!

I agree with both aerofurb and simonharper; it's the dirty boot release which annoys me most..

Best colour car I owned for not showing the dirt was a metalic green Citroen, any thoughts ?

Fear not, concerned brothers (and sisters... emoticon-0144-nod.gif ) - I don't have any intention on standing on the SM's seats - although, come to think of it it would keep the feet warm if the heaters are on...

And it now has a tad under 2600 miles under its paws, so no hangar queen this one. The SM gets washed at work (living in a first floor apartment makes hosepipes a bit of a problem...) and at the moment is normally just as grubby by the time I get it home as before it was washed! emoticon-0124-worried.gif

Makes me feel better though and looks so good when clean! emoticon-0144-nod.gif

3300 on mine!! and loosening up nicely. I know why your White Yeti looks so clean - it's all the white salt! LOL

We get mud and other manure like items on our roads from the farm equipment so the clean look only lasts one trip out. In summer the sun dries the mud and the (continuous) rain washes the manure away.

Boot release does get a bit dirty but at least it operates with the slightest touch and the hatch opens easily so you don't get too dirty a digit. Shutting it is a clean job thanks to the rubber dongle thing hanging down - no need to grab the edge of the hatch on the SM unlike many other cars. emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Ask any Australian, South African or someone from the middle east which colour is the easiest to keep clean and they will all say white. Perverse idea but true. I found the easiest colour to keep clean was a champagne metallic Astra I had.

My current grey metallic golf is the easiest to keep clean as most road spray is in essence grey dirty water which doesnt show too much, I hope my muscovado yeti has similar dirt repelling qualities, if not then who cares. Driving a freshly cleaned car always feels good and as my dad says, they drive better when they are cleaned!
