2.8 V6 oil filter on 1.8T engine

Featured Replies

An interesting one I've come up with.

At the last RR day at awesome, I was looking under the Race TT they have there, and I noticed that the oil filter was MASSIVE!!!

Now, I've been looking over on vwspares, and they list the normal 1.8t oil filter, but they also show one for the 2.8 V6 engine found in passats and superbs. link here VW Spares That looks very much like the one on the awesome TT.

Would it be easy to fit one to a 1.8t engine? More importantly, would it make any difference? Obviously it would involve changing a few parts eg. filter mount, oil cooler etc. After all, awesome gti have probably done it for a reason.

Any thoughts?

to be honest im not sure but i would like to find out i will ask a few people.

Cool, if you could. It might be a nice mod for the octy :D

I've found a pic of the v6 filter

Taken from eurocarparts.

Compare it to the 1.8t filter

Taken form MJM Autohaus.

It looks as if the rubber seat may be the same size as the standard one, so it might fit, but just overhang slightly.

VAG P/N is 078115561J

I've emailed sarah at awesome to get a bit on info

why bother? theres nothing wrong with the octy filter?

what possible gain could be had from doing this?

Well, you would have more capacity for oil, so it should keep the supply cooler.

Also, with the filter (probably) having more paper media inside, it will provide less restriction, therefore lowering the chance of the bypass valve opening at high RPM's.

Put it this way, what harm can it do?

At least 10bhp.

I'd have thought a 1.8T would flow more oil than a V6 due to the turbo and what have you so I'd make sure the flow rate is at least as high as the 1.8T's filter.

TBH they both look to be about the same capacity to me....

The bloke across the road from me drives a lorry. The oil filter on that is huge. I wonder...

C'mon guys!!

I didn't post this to get stupid answers. It was a genuine question. Obviously it will make sod all difference to the performance of the car. It might just keep the oil a *tiny* bit nicer for the engine and turbo...

After all, we all know what VW are like for trying to save money on parts.

UPDATE:

Just been into halfrauds today to have a sneaky look.

Both filters have the same thread size and gasket diameter, so it will physically fit on the engine.

However, it's about half an inch longer than the standard one, and a bit over an inch wider, so whether or not it would fit in with the SAI pump and air con plumbing around it is another matter. It would defo increase oil capacity though.

Also, having a look over on vwvortex and the USA sites, it seems to already be the thing to to over there, with people fitting big NAPA and wix filters etc to their 20vT's.

Ok, it will fit on the pickup plate. Next question; does the V6 filter have (or not as applicable) a non-return valve?

Followed by, if you're concerned about oil temperature, why not fit an oil cooler rather than bodging it with a bigger filter?

It s a well known mod, but totally pointless on a mildly tuned engineemoticon-0148-yes.gif

Ken, it has a non return valve and the bypass pressure is the same, I have checked.

Oil temperature isn't the main reason I was thinking of this mod. For the people on the forum who have highly modified 20vT engines, which place more stresses on the oil system, it would provide slightly less restriction in the oil flow, POSSIBLY helping to keep a smoother supply of oil to the turbo. They would more than likely have oil coolers fitted anyway, so the filter's cooling ability is irrelevant.

I completely agree. On a standard, maybe remapped car, it won't have any benefit.

---------------------------

To everyone who has replied to this, I wasn't suggesting that this mod would add another 100 bhp to the car, or magically transform the car. I know that it won't really be a benefit to a standard engine. HOWEVER, for a track day car for example, it would be a worthwhile mod, considering those engines are a lot more stressed than normal.

Using the standard oil filter on a standard engine makes complete sense. However, a lot of the engines on the forum as FAR from standard, so using something because it is the standard part doesn't really add up.

I was just suggesting it might be a worthy little mod to add to all of the other mods for the car. It's not like I'm forcing anyone to do this, so there is no reason to be so downright negative.

Sorry for the somewhat long reply, I was just clarifying to people my reasons behind the mod.

Interesting read rk696.

And always nice to hear some different topic to "where can I get a remap" and "what suspension is best" ....

come on guys people spend a lot more money doing other pointless mod's.

It is a mod that certainly can't hurt providing spec is the same or better and it does not foul any other parts.

Agreed

rk696, I was just asking the questions I'd want answering before fitting a non-standard oil filter to any engine.

If you're running an oil cooler, you've increased the oil volume in the engine anyway, with the sandwich plate, lines and cooler itself.

As to other possible advantages, is the volume flow rate of the stock filter marginal at peak revs? If not, then you certainly won't show an advantage without a high volume (not high pressure; there is no point in getting an extra 15PSI in the galleries, cos that equates to about 1% in the bearing films) oil pump.

We run a 1.8T audi TT in a race series. The engine spends most of it's life at the 7000rpm end of the rev range at 340bhp. We've just taken the engine apart after two seasons use for a checkover and rebuild for more power, and all looks perfect inside regarding oil supply - bearings, crank, cams etc. Oil pressure has never been an issue, we have no seperate oil cooler and full-time data logs for oil temperature and pressure show all is well. Standard oil filter will be staying ;) No reason why the larger one should be a "bad" thing as such though.
