VRS - Petrol or Diesel?

The Focus ST on full chat makes one of the best car noises ever, I'd love one!

And I may even buy one this year if things go well :D

Ahh, thanks for that, now I'm all confused again... :( ....that ST did sound great.....and put a big smile on my face.. :D

I found the Focus to feel wide, when I last drove one, I sensation I didn't get driving an Octavia. Not sure if it's good or bad!

if its a 2nd car and you doing low milage defo a petrol....v flexible fast and fun with a huge boot an cabin.

as others have suggested why not go 4 summat else? ST or a clio sport or type r?

vrs are great and i bought mine as my only car to do everthing in but they aint the most nimble/chuckable.

dont get me wrong made the right choice but sounds like you should try as many as poss before deciding.

defo petrol though..............babs is right, marmite burners smell

I had this choice last month. I had a Fabia VRS re mapped to 175bhp and 290lbs of torque. That was quick and had lots of power on the road. I was wondering if I should stay diesel or go petrol. I drove a petrol VRS and I didnt have to think anymore. The TFSI engine is awesome and very flexible. As standard I was amazed as to how it put the power down on the road. It felt like there was a lot more than 197bhp under the bonnet. I have been averaging 34mpg on the trip to work. This drops to 28 mpg going home, but I think we all drive quicker home than to work. I have just got 38mpg doing motorway speeds and was very impressed with that. Given that its turbocharged and the power output. I shall soon have my Shark Performance stage 1 map and I am keen to see how that will affect my economy. All the other cars I have had mapped have always been more economical. If I was you I would have the petrol!

Focus ST for the win ;)

Seriously though I had a ride in blade404's one on an airfield handling day and that 5 pot really does sound awsome.

Petrol v Diesel? Nowadays, the real debate is about colour: Race Blue vs Candy White - doesn't matter what engine you get, Race Blue is better  It has "Race" in the name, so it must be?! :giggle:

On a more serious note, you're always going to get a million and 1 view on the petrol v diesel debate. I'm in the camp where I would happily have both - even though I do low mileage, I would still have a diesel. However, the decision for me anyway was made not by MPG/BHP/how they drive etc but by the evil DPF. If you're not doing the right style/length/duration of duration, then be very wary about getting a diesel with a DPF.

If it's just a plain "one versus the other" choice, then drive both and see.

Don't know too much about the DPF - can someone enlighten me.

Thanks

DPF - am I correct in thinking that if you are mainly doing short journeys the DPF is a problem? Do all VRS diesels have DPFs?

DPF - Diesel Particulate Filter. All vRS diesels have one.

Probably more a case of doing short runs at low speed. My commute is 7/8 miles, so not that long, but does include a dual carriageway and I have not experienced any problems with the DPF.

You'll not get double the mpg with the diesel.

The difference is about 10mpg.

If you're doing a lot of miles the diesel will make sense obviously but you've not mentioned that.

You really need to drive both before you make your mind up. There really isn't much between them and you need to see which one drives in a way that you like best.

In the Golf GTI I get 32mpg (TSI engine may give you 2-3mpg more), in the VRS CR driven in the same way I get 47mpg (which will no doubt improve with age.

I've done just over 1000 miles now & the CR engine is so linear it doesn't feel like a TDI..and it revs to 5000rpm with ease.

Today I came through Milton Keynes & pushed it through some roundabouts...it rolls more than the Golf but resists understeer well...gets the power down better than the Golf & feels quicker to me until you run out of revs...but I only get another 1500rpm

in the Golf (who said an extra 2.5K?!).

But I have to say, I'd try both...I'm very lucky to have a VX for sunny days, a GTI for fun everyday....and a VRS CRD for fun on days where I need to carry a lot of stuff or just want to enjoy the added refinement it has over the others (I never thought I'd be writing that about a Derv. Skoda!!).

I've had a TDi Scout for 6 weeks - and the last 4 days it has been at the dealers. My wife's daily commute is 3-4 miles, including school and childcare drop-offs, and we only do a decent motorway run, at most, twice a month.

DPF warning light came on a couple of weeks ago, so I took it to the dealers who told me "take for a decent run" which, to me, didn't sound like "take for a decent run at this very instant". When I went to do that run a couple of days later, the engine went into limp mode (which seems to shut off the turbo and restrict fuel flow). It's been at the dealer since Monday morning now with (apparently) lots of tooing and froing between it and Skoda.

Maybe I should have bought the Subaru Legacy Outback, which is about 1500pounds cheaper than the Skoda here in Oz.....

PS. edited to add - I know that last statement is somewhat heretical, but :)

I was looking at 'Engine of the year awards' and came across this http://www.ukipme.com/engineoftheyear/winners_09/18_2.html

I thought the TSI was the same engine as the one in the Golf GTi? or is it the same as the old Golf GTI but not the latest one!??? :S

Edit - ok I did some research and the petrol one is model EA888 - man, this is one of the best engine's in the world ;-) methink I'll go and get a petrol VRS estate :-)

That article is a little confusing - my reading is that it's saying that Audi's previous gen turbo ended up in the GTI etc. and was a great engine. And then that the winning engine is even better and likely to spread. I assume it's a larger capcity using the same principles as the 1.4 turbo-supercharged engine?
