How far are you willing to travel?

I've seen a Carina E for sale in Barrow for £375. Too big?

sounds like it has potential, Barrow is fine, and old toyota's tend to go on forever.... any more dets? tax, mot?

Not too sure, its on the intranet at work. Claims to be reliable but don't they all? P-reg, 1.8, only 81k miles, it says. I can send you the details tomorrow morning if you like.

that would be cool, thanks :)

306TD I would have thought would be a good one to keep an eye out for, Dave. Maybe even a 406 might be in budget . . . plenty of the latter about as taxis so they can't be that bad.

what do you think about the sill rust? still at that price you could throw it away after a year!

Edited by sharkrider

The rust wouldn't bother me too much , but the seat looks like someone has died in it.

swmbo says she would immediatly buy seat covers! lol...... and she wont climb over if the door lock is broken.. (fake hip) gonna ring him tomorrow... flash garage, must be a part ex he doesn't want around....

Seat might come up nice with upholstery cleaner.

If the problem is the lock barrel, I believe the lock barrels on the facelift felicia aren't handed so you could swap the passenger and driver's over so then the passenger one is broken (but if the central locking works that won't be an issue). If driver's door opens fine on central locking might be worth looking at getting a cheap remote lock/unlock add-on.

ok... three cars we wanted this morning are sold, so we've bought the following old shed....

image0140.th.jpg

its a 1997 honda civic 1.6 ls with electric everything (and it all works!) tax to end of month, MOT mid september, three v.good tyres, one borderline, drives ok, no knocks or bangs. dodgy clutch, bites right at the top, and while it doesn't slip when you floor it from low revs, if you try to do a quick gearchange, it wont engage properly, it sort of slips until you let the revs drop, and then engages. so probablly needs a new clutch. engine light is on, probably a sensor, as it doesn't seem to tick over consistantly. no leaks from the engine bay (114,000 miles) , engine is probably ok, as I've just driven it 100 miles home, and nothing has gone wrong (mostly 80 mph motorway) gearbox is fine.price? I ended up paying him £360, so I recon thats ok :) oh, and It may need a new battery, as he said he had to jump it this mornng, I asked how long it had been standing, he said a week......

so, our lass is now mobile! lets see how long it lasts before falling apart! lol.... banger motoring, you gotta love it.

So you bought a Rover 400 :)

Not too shabby for the cash.

thanks :) well its done 122 miles in its first day, swmbo likes it, its been named leonard as in leonard rossiter in "rising damp" as it seems to be permenently misted up! I think either the recirc is stuck on, or its been stood for ages, seller didn't have any history, just wanted rid (it was a part ex, that he gave the guy £400 against and sold it to us for £360 :) )but it was MOT'd last sept at 113,000 miles and now only has 114,000 on it.... gonna have a tinker with it tomorow

well, bit of an old thread revival, but today the old honda gets scrapped!

just to prove you can go motoring on a shoestring (and its a 120bhp vtec honda, fully loaded with electric everything that works!) we paid £360 for her with 9 months MOT, got her through the next MOT just having to pay for new brake pipes (corroded)... money spent, just two new tyres, and a headlight bulb, and over 30,000 miles travelled in 2 years, not worth repairing now, so sold for scrap for £210 !!!

bloody bargin. great old car.

Cant beat old Jap for reliability. i had 2 nissan micras ( i know i know lol ) and they never let me down once.

Out of interest what went wrong with it for you to need to scrap it?

dunno exactly (she's not swmbo anymore, didnt get details..) just know its gone, had its MOT and wasn't worth spending to put it on the road... working it out at £360 outlay, two years reliable motoring and £210 scrap... cant complain! thats £150 for two years motoring...

banger mentality.... if she wasn't gonna get money for it scrap, I was gonna have it.... I liked that car! lol...

I'm in a similar situation if anyone has anything? Looking for the most economical car you got, ideally around £300 - £350. Wouldn't mind something like an N reg Nissan Micra 1.0L / Mk 3 Polo 1.0L / Mk 4 Polo 1.0L. Going to put the cash from my Lupo in the bank and run something a bit more economical (1.4 Automatic V 1.0 Manual).

Remember fuel economy is not a function of the displacement capacity of an engine. For example my 1.4 achieves under 40mpg, whereas more modern engines achieve far more MPG and can produce more horses. The 1l Polo might feel painfully slow to drive going from your current car.

I had a 1.0L Polo Mk3 as my first car and I'd agree it was shockingly slow compared to this. But it was much more fun to drive (especially in the snow because I wasn't that worried about it) and I'd put a motorbike exhaust on so it gave me a childish grin and still decent fuel economy :). I know a modern car will most likely be more efficient but I'd only want to be spending my budget and putting the rest of the sale straight in the bank.
