Mk II vRS PD to FL vRS CR - much difference?

Featured Replies

My currrent vRS PD estate will be coming up for renewal in June and after looking around and getting some prices, I might just replace it with the same again.

What I'd like to know is if anyone else has done the same and how does the FL compare to the previous model. I know there's the new CR engine, but does it drive any different? Is the handling and ride the same (mine's on the 18" wheels)? What about cabin quality and if anyone has added leather, are the seats more or less comfortable?

Would be interested in any comments as the current deals that are being offered make it a very compelling choice even when spec'd up to the eyeballs with leather, heated seats, xenons, sunset glass, etc., etc.

I have moved from a Vrs PD to a FL Vrs Tsi so cant comment on the new CR engine, however, I can say that the cabin is a far nicer place to be, especially with the Bolero stereo which is a big jump up from the old stream unit.

The instrument panel is much easier on the eye, with nice white lighting which gives it a very 'clean' appearance especially when coupled with maxidot.

With regards the ride, the suspension setup is identical, however, I have now got eibachs on the FL and much prefer it now.

From what I have read on here, people rate the CR engine as being far better to drive than the PD. Much quieter to the point where you can hardly hear it when moving, smoother and more linear in its power delivery and with slightly improved mpg (only 1 or 2 though I think!)

I for one am extremely glad that I made the move.

Concur with this. Have not regretted the move to a CR vRS. The CR engine is a vast improvement over the PD IMHO.

This topic has been discussed previously quite recently, try doing a search.

I test drove both in my search for the new car. I found that in the PD engined car, I felt that 1st gear was a bit short and the car was quite sensitive to throttle inputs. Getting into the CR, the ride was immediately noticeable as smoother but the grip does not appear to have suffered - as much as I could tell in a test drive anyway! The engine is much smoother and I found the whole experience much nicer. Definately worth hunting a FL vRS down for a comparision test drive!
