more bad luck!

okay so at the end of january some of you may have seen my post about my egr valve and blown turbo... what a nightmare that was! EGR, intercooler and turbo all replaced (garrett)

had the oil n filter changed for the warrenty at 1k got to 1200 and the car has started making a strange whining sound i havnt ever heard. at around 2k it sounds a little bit like if you held the end of a balloon and let the air come out slowly but abit higher pitch. the were some rubbing marks on the plastic section of boost pipe where it joins the L shape into the intercooler it had been rubbing on the alternator pully. replaced the clips in the pipe and cable tied it as far away as i could. still makes the noise!

then... mot was due, had to replace my handbrake caliper and rear bumpstops.

then... having a look around noticed the two bolts that hold the alloy section of induction pipe above/behind the rocker cover had dissapeared and it was moving freely!? looked further down and on the intake side of my turbo theres about 3 inches of rubber pipe till it attaches to this alloy section, on the alloy end the rubber pipe had slipped off the lip and the clip was wonky. source of the noise maybe? got the garrage to sort it out.

still making the noise!!

and now to top everything off my clutch is slipping in 5th and 6th. acelerating at about 2.5k the revs jump round to 3k and then work thier way back down as it beggins to catch. checked my oil and it was at the bottom of the stick. my friend suggested maybe my crankseal is leaking and my oil is ending up on the clutch? topped it up and im checking it every day.

so far the turbo etc cost me 1600 quid, mot & handbrake etc 400. my insurance is like 800 quid and thats due at the end of this month. if i need a new clutch on top of this i will not take it well!!

does anyone know howmuch a new clutch is? if its worth shelling out for an uprated? and weather a new DMF is required at the same time?

oh and im pretty certain my car has more power than befor, it pulls alot better. the garage who did the work said, in thier words "erm they sent us a Garrett and its a little bit bigger than the kkk..." nice... :wonder: if i had known the turbo had died in the first place i would have taken it to veedub.

my car has just clocked over 70k. my father has a 54 plate (same as me) a4 company car, hes done 250k in it...and he seems to think he hasnt had the clutch or turbo replaced.

wheres the justice????

i dont think i can take much more of this :'(

My clutch is slipping the same as yours but mines does it anytime i put power on in any gear and only on full throttle

I'm going for a helix (I think it is) 4 paddle clutch and keeping the DMF as i've been told the DMF is fine with a good clutch on it. Long as it's not excessively worn which at 45k i'd imagine mines will be fine as theirs no juddering. This came from 2 VW mechanics one of whom had a Polo GT TDi running 270bhp with the 4 paddle and DMF

It's him i take all my advice from

Is the car mapped? Missing nuts/bolts never a good sign after major work, as it usually indicates the garage also run Pony Express, aka cowboys. Properly maintained the Fabia is a very reliable car (always the odd lemon though). Poorly maintained, any turbo diesel is a money pit. You can't even trust most factors, my local one lists the wrong oil for the VRS.

Generally the fabia vrs is a very reliable car. I'm coming up to 108,000 miles on original turbo and clutch, and apart from a front nearside wheelbearing, I've not had to repair or replace anything that wasn't considered general maintenance. Ok, my EGR valve is just starting to weep oil from where it joins a small pipe below, but I'm hoping a replacement gasket will cure this before I buy a new one.

Before you look at buying a new clutch, I would advise doing some sharp pull-aways from standstill a few times. Sometimes the friction plate can become glazed and it will start slipping quite easily under boost. I had a similar thing happen to me around 70,000 miles, but following the advice of other members on the forum, I tried the above method and it cured the slipping. This might remedy it for you. Of course it all depends on your driving style, and if you drive it hard, then maybe a new clutch will be required. Try this first though.

Another couple of observations: if you're still hearing a high-pitched sound, it could still be down to a boost leak somewhere where the pipes join. Check these over again.

As regards the low oil level - this would concern me, as these engines barely use any oil between changes. I top up maybe once in every 10,000 miles. If it's losing it, then I would be checking whether it's losing it through the EGR valve, pipes or turbo. I doubt it would be a rear main seal.

For any future repairs, I'd recommend taking it to a VAG specialist who know their way around these cars. Really wouldn't risk taking it anywhere else.

hey guys thanks..

my fab, enginewise is standard and i am very kind to it compared to how my friends treat thier cars!

the only reason i took it to my local garage and not Vdub was the 30mile journey to my local dealer and they have no recovery. the car broke down near-ish me and i didnt think it was anything serious as it just cut out with no knocking, or bangs or loss of power, it was night too so i didnt see any smoke. it just simply cut out asif there was no fuel, afew people told me it was proberly my EGR valve so i had them take it.

i very much regret that now. apart from this, all the work ever done has been and will be done by volkswagen while i own it.

and regarding willsvrs' post these sharp pull aways - are we talking about launches here? what was your technique? i really hope this solves it. i got a quote today for VW for 750 quid fitted plus another 500 for a flywheel. oh my days :(

The OEM Skoda Clutch Complete with DMF is £400+fitting, so the VW garage are having a laugh.

I would shop about and go else where.

If it helps my ERG failed at 89k (ish) when the skoda dealer replaced it he did say it was a total mess, the worse he had seen...................whatever that means? Since then no problems

Clutch now on 93.5k miles remapped to 310lbft for 80k miles now, generally its ok just a very slight slip if lazy in gear change. But mine up until June last year was just a weekend motorway car only with the odd trackday/santa pod type event. I know it will need changing in the not so near future but if I'm carefull and dont be silly it should last longer.

Trouble with dodgey little garages they ruin it for the ones that do give a top and good service.

Yes it's the standard Sachs clutch and DMF. If your mapped to 170BHP or less it will just cope, if driven carefully.

£289 for the lot is a great price, only £34 for the release bearing and it's all decent kit, just not OEM as it doesn't come in a Skoda Box
