Brake fluid - how much?

Featured Replies

When I get around to fitting the new 312's up front and servicing all my brakes i'm going to change the fluid as its been about 2 years since it was done. I'm going to upgrade to Dot 5 - How much do i need to do a complete drain and refill??

Cheers

DOT 5 is SILICONE brake fluid - it is not compatible with the DOT4 currently used - and make sure the brake seals are compatible first.

I would go with DOT 5.1 fluid - it is compatible with DOT4 but has better properties.

Most car systems only hold about 1 ltr of fluid in total - if yr pretty good with the bleeding sequence you should get away with 2 ltrs.

I hope you mean upgrade to dot 5.1 as dot 5 is that's silicone based and not compatable with dot 4.

I am wanting to know how much fluid as well as I am needing a change and I've got some high quality dot 4. How many 500 ml botles should I give the mechanic to change & bleed the system?

Yeah - i did mean 5.1!

5.1 is a tenner a litre in Halfords. You should only need a litre for a change but get two because it's better to have too much. You always spill a bit and need a bit extra for the Eezi Bleed

I got 2x 500 of 5.1 last time I did a change and that was fine.

1 litre will be enough to sufficiently flush and fill the system. Empty the resivoir by bleeding it off the drivers side front brake, refill resivoir and bleed accordinly.

Worth asking however, are you planning on track using the car regualr to warrent DOT 5.1 fluid? If its just fast road and occasional track, you could use something like Motul RBF 660 fluid which is DOT 4 but with better boiling points.

I live in Scotland and regularly go spanking along single track & very twisty roads where i'm always hard on the brakes - the brake fluid at the moment keeps boiling and I have some serious brake-fade issues! May be going to the Ring next year too!

The Motul RBF660 is a DOT4+ fluid - designed to work better in the modern ABS systems.

DOT 5.1 is the next step up in conventional brake fluids and is the best you can get without changing to a DOT5 SILICONE brake fluid.

For the small difference in price I would always advise a change to DOT5.1

I used DOT5.1 in my car and my Honda Blackbird - car feels no different but the bike feels so much better on the 5.1

Im planning on upgrading to DOT 5.1 with my 312mm's also.

You DO NOT bleed by pumping the pedal. It must be done by a vacuum device to prevent master cylinder seal damage.

In the case of the fabia ive used a pressure bleed kit however, ive yet to come across any car that has a good service record to start with where the 2 man method has damaged any seals and the only reason for me to warrent using a pressure kit is for simplicity and convience of only needing one person to change the brake fluid and being able to monitor for any leaks on the brake system, but if it fails (which it did 10 seconds into using it) Id revert back to 2 person method as the car is an everyday car that I cant afford to have off the road.
