A quest for Skoda Superb Elegance

Featured Replies

Hello Everybody,

I am new to this forum and have got some questions for you. But first... would like to say I really enjoyed the conversation between rotodiesel and Briskodian. Guys, you rock :) On almost every topic there is a fight... 1.9 vs. 2.0 :) hehehe

Now more on the Skoda. I am going to buy a Superb, MKI, ideally not older than 2005, with low mileage and low on owners, of course. It has to be in manual as I have both legs working ;) It must be Elegance trim and with 130 HP 1.9 PD TDI engine (I am sorry Briskodian), unless there is a really very very good 2.0, I might be tempted.

My budget is £5k-£8k, possible extension to £9k.

I have recently gone nearly 100miles from where I live to buy one Superb, which matched my requirements. Unfortunately the dealer/owner lied to me over the phone. So If you read this forum you know you should be ashamed of yourself Mister! Don't want to go into details, but I explicitly asked many questions over the phone to eliminate the doubtful model, but I did not expect I would be that disappointed when I first saw the car. I wasted my time and money....

So, are there any good Superbs out there? I searched autotrader, ebay and few other websites, including Skoda Dealers, but found nothing interesting in my vicinity... 100miles radius :) I live in east Berkshire and there is one high up in Scotland, I believe, the 100th edition model, but I am now afraid this might be the same trip I took last time. I have heard that you shouldn't buy company cars as they do take a beating from their drivers, but it looks like most of the Superbs that are on sale now are old company cars with high mileage. Is this a bad time to buy a car? Should I wait a little bit longer? I really like the Superb and would like to own one. Don't want anything else. Well I would have wanted If I had more cash - simple that is, Skoda Superb is my choice.

I had that with a car dealer, only it was 300 miles I went to see it, to find a badly 75% resprayed, engine rattling, seat belt frayed a day after they mot'd it, and the list goes on, that was a chancer dealer btw, but I also had a VW dealer let me travel 140 miles to view and ex hire car that had been smashed and in house repaired, so don't think just cos it's main agent all will be ok, I finally got one from the agent in Canterbury, where the car was as described and to coin a phrase, been SUPERB!

Hi - nice to see you've chosen the right model

Just an idea - but if you are not chopping in your old car, it could be worth asking the Scottish dealer (what type of dealer is it?) whether they do nationwide delivery. Yeah, they're gonna charge you, but if they have confidence in their car as described at a price agreed then you could get the car you want without actually travelling and send them on their way if the car's not right. Depends how much they need to sell a car I guess. As I said, just an idea...

good luck

Don't rule out Laurin and Klement (probably out of price range) and Edition 100 models. You should be able to get an Edition 100 in budget, and they are a lovely spec indeed.

I looked at quite a few Superbs before I found one - there are some real dogs around.

The main problem when I was looking was that because they don't shift easily, most were demos or salesman's cars (or both). The evidence of mis-treatment was widespread - some cars were presented to me in a disgraceful state (dealer in W. London please note). Many had flat batteries and rusty brake disks - not exactly fast movers.

The one I eventually bought was generally in good nick - although the selling dealer had managed to damage the underside with a mis-applied trolley jack. Despite their efforts, the car has been almost 100% reliable.

Your problem is that the cars are now quite a bit older and will have been exposed to the dealers' malpractices for longer. All I can suggest is that you keep looking and don't be tempted to buy a car because it's near or because you're fed up with looking. Cars which are inaccurately described are a real pain.

I give credit to Jeremy Taylor at Rainworth Motors for being completely accurate in the description of my car (I travelled a good distance to see it) and for making the agreed specification changes to it before delivery. It's such a pity that, at least at the time, their service department didn't remotely match this.

Finally got one... 1.9 TDI of the Skoda dealer in Letchworth. It was one of those Skoda Approved Vehicles. I read previous posts and knew I couldn't trust them. Well, they did a good job, but not great as:

Car was supposed to be ready on Thursday, then they delayed it to Saturday. On Friday afternoon when I called them to confirm that everything is OK I was told the car would be ready for Tuesday. Apparently as a Skoda Approved Vehicle they do everything on it... blah blah, right. In the end I pushed them to Monday.

Arrived at 3pm as agreed and had to wait until 5pm for my car to get ready. There were some things they need were supposed to do:

- replace front door panels due to scratching marks - DONE

- body paint work corrections - not finished, I was told it had been finished, but there are places where it looks like nothing has been done

- refurbished alloys - DONE

- car serviced - done

- car Mot'd - done

- car cleaned - this really got me upset as I told them explicitly to clean the seatbelts and they did not do it. I had to clean them myself.

Other than that, I am very happy with my Skoda. It is in Elegance Edition. Nice cream leather, no electricity problems, no water ingress problem (so far). Does around 45-50 mpg on my trips to work (country lanes + city traffic). It is very comfortable, although I get funny sound coming from passenger side dashboard when doing hard turns on roundabout.

Just wanted to say thanks to all of you guys. You're doing great work. This forum is very resourceful and I made use of the information that is here.

That will probably be a CV joint, if not check what the tyre is like, if it's a hard compound it has been known to cause a wheel bearing like hum/drone before.

Dashboard creaks are very common on the B5.5. The body flexes as the car is cornered and VAG made no allowance for this by leaving the necessary margins for movement and by using resilient fixings. (BMW know all about this and get it right).

It's sometimes possible to improve this by the selective use of small rubber wedges between the screen and the dashboard - you have to experiment a bit. You can trim them off so as to be invisible when the final position is found. This fixed my car's noise which was very bad with a cold car on a sharp LH bend.

If it's any help, the problem gets a lot better in the Summer when the dashboard moulding becomes more flexible. Hope you enjoy your car - try to fix the car's weaknesses as posted on the Forum before they come back to bite you.

Sorry to cut in, the 2.0 is a Common Rail I believe.

There are no CR engines fitted to the Mk1 Superb.
