is it worth having flywheel done?

Featured Replies

i have a 54 plate octy which is due its MOT in july - so i need to work out soonish if im gonna out it through

it needs a flywheel :(

also needs a bush, brake warning light cable fixed, airbag light reset and prob 2 tyres so the cost is mounting up

i love my octy and would love to have the work done, but, is it worth it? the car has done near 144,000 miles now

A Flywheel has nothing to do with a MOT !

Depends on which bush, but how do you know you have a "brake warning light cable" fault , and the airbag might just want a

vag-com to reset it, and the tires are just about £100.

so if you have only £100 to spend on a car that got 144K on it thats not bad, and I reckon you will get double that mileage out of it

no, but if its going in to be fixed it might as well be all dont at the same time, i am not going to get work done to put it through another MOT only for the flywheel to need done a few weeks after - it would be all or nothing

i know the brake warning light cable has been cut, the light is on, the brakes are fine as they were done late last year, oh, and the main dealer checked the car and told me it was cut!!! it happened when a shock absorber was fitted

i know the cost of tyres, god knows i have replaced enough, and yes the airbag light does just need re-set - and it cost me £71 the last time

sorry i posted now as your reply has been worded in a manner to make me sound really silly

Chill out SuziB, just some light hearted Skoda style banter - there was nothing meant by it :)

I'm guessing yours is a Mk1 on a '54 plate so you're in the wrong forum, but no matter as the question is just as relevant.

Flywheel labour will set you back around £250 ish depending on where you go. Personally, with a older car (no offence, mines knocking on a bit now!) with that mileage I wouldn't go anywhere near a main dealer as you'll usually pay more. The part itself is likely to cost a couple of hundred quid - not sure what model you have but this for example:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Skoda-Flywheel-with-Clutch-Octavia_W0QQitemZ310196732552QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item48392a8288

Fitting the clutch at the same time should cost no more money so would be worth doing while your car is in pieces and you're forking out the cash - something like the above auction would be ideal, getting the clutch thrown into the deal.

Payingm £71 to get your air bag light switched off is madness - you could probably get a gizmo off eBay that will reset codes for you for under £20. I bought one off a member here for my Audi TT owning friend and it cost less than a tenner. Bear in mind the light is probably on for a reason - if reset it may well come back on again but doesn't cause any problems - it's just annoying. I had an old Peugeot with the same problem and removed the bulb from the dashboard display - voila! Need to spare a thought for potential safety issues though i.e. is your airbag working ok?

Is it worth it? Depends on your plans. With the tyres ect. and anything else the MOT throws up, it will probably cost you in the region of £600 - £800, but if you don't get it done the car will basically be worthless. Seems a shame to condemn a relatively new car though - could trade it in perhaps?

Hang on in there matey, my cars got 142k on the clocks now. And you should see the amount of parts and how much i've spent on mine!

It would certainly top blow yours out of the water, but it appears my cars had somewhat of a hard life before i got it. (Harsh remap i wasn't aware of)

Bits of bashed up trims/worn seats. It had a refurbished gearbox at 117k when i bought it at the cost of the private garage.

Im guessing the brake sensor wiring could be re soldered and sealed with heatshrink, but i cant confirm that without actually looking at the wire.

I fitted a set of Original ATE pads to my car and it wore into the sensor without triggering it :S

I've now fitted a set of genuine VAG pads (pagid), hopefully these ones will register on the dashboard this time.

The way I look at it is that keeping any car with any value on the road is going to cost at least £1,000 per year in depreciation alone. So if your (older) car costs less than £1,000 per year to fix then you're in pocket.

If it's an otherwise good runner, I wouldn't hesitate to get the work done and enjoy a few more years good motoring out of it

My last car was 15 years old and still going strong, until it went for the government scrappage scheme.

Do you have DMF problem? Is it 1.9 or 2.0 diesel? Skoda UK are converting troublesome DMF,s to Single Mass Flywheels now as i have had mine converted and a new clutch also at 33K.

Good luck and keep us posted

I'm not sure posting is a good idea if you take offence so easily when others offer good advice but here goes...

With regards your car buying a newer car with lower miles on it will cost significantly more than the cost of the repairs/running costs on yours. If you do buy a newer car it'll depreciate by more than the cost of the repairs in the first year anyway so i'd look at the costs and get the work done assuming no other major issues are looming. You average almost 30k a year so i'll assume tyres aren't an issue, a copy of VCDS isn't that expensive and dealers usually only charge £65 for 30 mins diagnostics/resets, an indy will charge less and if you ask nicely i'm sure you can find someone who's local who'll do it for little/nothing. A bush and a brake sensor cable being replaced is hardly expensive, that leaves the flywheel as the only large cost, get quotes from a reputable indy and the main dealer then get the dealer to price match.

thanks for the input everyone....just to add i dont easily take offence when peopel are offering good advice, just the insinuation that the things i said were wrong may not be wrong kind of got to me, especially as i have been a member for a long time, just never posted

i love the car and dont want to get rid of it, ever tbh - but didnt want to be floggin a dead horse either

obviously im not that technically minded, but i do know a wee bit about them

its not the mk1, its the mk2

its a 1.9tdi and everything i have ever bought from the motor factors has caused confusion - i had to buy 2 diff cv joints, and 2 diff sets of brake pads in the past (returning the ones we didnt use obvs) because the 54 plate showed with diff options

its not the mk1, its the mk2

My bad - forgot the VRS Mk2 came out later than the other models.

A single flywheel and clutch system will cost you £230 fitted at a dealer, that's all it cost me to replace my DMF from Chathams in Edinburgh

Why has your airbag warning light come on have you disconnected any of the cables???/
