Noisy Diesel?

Featured Replies

After driving a rental 2.0tdi dsg Passat for about seven weeks(yep,7!) waiting for my 2.0 pd dsg 140 L&K to be straightened out I find the Octy to be much noisier engine-wise,and more wind noise at M-way speeds(probably from the rv mirrors.

Can anything be done to damp down the engine racket?

The VW is a v nice motor, but I still MUCH prefer my Skoda.

Here's hopin'.David.

Got to have some incentive to switch to a VW.emoticon-0106-crying.gif

Tyre roar is the major noise source in my Octavia and once the engine is warm it just produces a pleasant growl IMHO. Wind noise is not something that has bothered me.

I owned a B5.5 1.9l diesel estate a coupe of years ago and that was pretty smooth at speed.

Diesels are noisy, live with it :)

I have just got rid of my 2.0 PD 140 DSG Octavia , but i found the engine to be significantly noisier and less smooth than the 1.9 unit in my Fabia vRS. It was getting better as the mileage built up, but nowhere near as good as the Fabia.

The Fabia is also a lot crisper and more responsive, albeit with a remap, but my first Fabia vRS was standard and just about as good. I wonder if this is typical of the 2.0 diesel. Will be interesting hearing others comments. Maybe i was taking bad coming out of the Fabia, which is frankly phenomenal, but i was expecting the 2.0 to be an improvement considering it is the more modern engine.

Looking for a 1.9 tdi Octavia now as a replacement with a manual gearbox.

Whats wrong with a noisy diesel? Quite like it myself, or am I the only one?

not alone - i liked the dumper truck noise my old passat TDI 90 used to make.

can't understand anyone who thinks the TDI 105 i replaced it with is noisy myself :)

The CR's aren't noisy but having had a Passat, it felt quicker strangely, and it had the same engine.

I agree. My 105 TDI is reassuringly a diesel but I wouldn't describe it as noisy. Admittedly, I don't have a lot of reference for comparisons, but IMHO my engine doesn't sound to me like the agricultural and unrefined descriptions often used when talking about these engines. Sure, you can hear it's a diesel, but you can also feel it's a diesel too with all that low down grunty torque

A noisy engine in a Ferrari is one thing. A noisy diesel is another!

,,, and yes I do drive a diesel. I do actually think that the CR sounds quite good at times when accelerating.

I have an fl petrol vRS and god does it sound good at high revs - wanted to lose some idiot who was tailgating me tonight and I gunned it in second and third and the scream as it heads toward the deadline is addictive.

MY PD140 superb is much quieter than the PD140 Octy I had previously, you barely notice you are driving a diesel at all.

So it is possible to quieten that engine down then;presumably down to more efficient sound dampening on the Superb?

My 2.0 Tdi Scout is is the quietest diesel Iv owned and Iv had a few makes and models over the years, and my hearing is fine thanks ;)

i could certainly stand my diesel louder.

it might kill some of the tyre roar.

The 1.9 PD engines are much noisier than the 2.0L variants.

Some VW Passat 1.9PD engines have noise insulation around their sumps ( glued ?) It might be worth looking at these insulation pads for application to other 1.9 PD engines.

I think skoda have skimped on sound proofing on the Octavia generally
