trying to connect modem to router problems. help needed

Featured Replies

can anyone help. i have a linkseys -g router and im trying to connect it to my webstar modem but there is no ethernet port for me to connect it to? help greatly appriciated.

Im presuming your connecting via a telephone socket for your broadband rather than a cable conenction (i.e Virgin Media)....

ANd is it also the case your connecting to the Modem via USB?

no its a modem through virgin mate. not great with computors lol

But it's got to be connected to your computer with either ethernet or USB at the moment. Is it USB?

oh get ya. yeah its connected modem to computor via an ethernet cable, but i have to connect the router to the modem via another eithernet cale that came with it but there is not another port on the modem?

Connect the router to the modem and the computer to the router.

Something like this at the back of the modem ???

Then something like this on the router ??? sorry about the pic size lol

If so plug number 4 into the blue(i think, i'm colour blind) port usually labelled internet. Switch them both off then turn the modem on first for about a minute, then the fire up the router.

See if that works

As fatty and wega said, it is just a case of disconnecting the ethernet cable coming from the Virgin Cable Modem to your computer and plugging it into the router port named Internet/WAN instead, then its a case of setting up your Router, be it ethernet cable to your computer or laptop or wirelessly, setting up the router is relatively easy just access the router via Internet Explorer

cant connect the comp to the router its a laptop.

It should still have an ethernet port. Or go wireless if it has wireless which I guess is your aim here ???

right im sat lookin at my modem and at the back is;- power suply, ethernet, USB, and cable( this being the one to the wall) both the ethernet cable and the USB one is connected to my laptop. there is no USB at the back of the router, only a port sayin internet and 4 other ports. if i connect the ethernet cable from my laptop to my router what about the USB? sorry for soundin thick lol.

Souds like you got the two connections pluggedm in there you only need one of them.

Take the ethernet from the modem and plug it in the internet port on the router.

in this situation normally your modem is direct into into the pc. What your are trying to do now is go from the modem into the router

and then out to the pc or wireless laptop etc

just disconected the USB from my laptop and the internet wouldnt come on. plugged that back in and unplugged the ethernet cable and the internet is workin?

Haha

I had a feeling you may say that.

try what I said earlier and see if the routers internet symbol lights up when you go into from the modem with the ethernet cable, don't forget too turn both off and the modem back on first, give it a minute then switch the router on.

right think i have sorted how to connect it. new problem now though. when i run the cd i got with the router all gos well then it says error and cant configure router with the computor? when i click on the little symbol at the bottom of the toolbar which brings up a list of wireless conections linksey which is mine comes up but i cant connect to it?

Just a thought , but you could just press the reset button on the router and it should all just work. But be wary your router will not be secure at all

  • Author

if i press reset could i make it secure again afterwards?

Have you RTFM?

  • Author

RTFM???? now ya have me all confused! my comp says its connected, says signal strength high and says my ip adress and the name of the router but...... still wont connect. anyway ill try again in the mornin. cheer s for all your help guys.

See if you can get the WAN IP off of the router and see if it overlaps with the LAN IP's it is doling out. or try connecting the modem to a non Internet port on the router.
