S6 Day Running Lights and Superb

Featured Replies

all,

i am running an 06 Superb Elegance, as a Taxi..... its done 129k and rouch wood, all is good with no major hassles...

my punters love the car, as its in Black and looks like a mirror (bit of a cleaning freak!) ALWAYS get positive comments..

got the windows tinted, and looks the mutts.. however, am loving the DRL's on the new Octy VRS and Audi's... now have been looking for ages, and think the S6 ones in the bumper grilles would look the best on the superb....

has anyone fitted these..?? genuine or otherwise.... i don't want to buy 19.99 ones from fleabay... and the halfrauds ones wouldn't light up a matchbox......!!!!

before i splash out around £200 for genuine ones... just wnated to know if anyone has done it........ if so, how easy was it, much butchering required and any cheaper non genuine ones that look as good..??

thanks

Lee

Haven't, wouldn't but wouldn't mind seeing results. Try here too.

This is what they had done in Germany.

Site is in German but is easy to understand or run it with google translate.

Good luck

What... How Much? !!!

Daytime running lights or daylight robbery lights?

.............. ok I'll get my coat.

DRL's are not just some LED's stuck on the front of your car, a lot of design and development go into these products to meet the legal requirements so the price doesn't suprise me, bear in mind it's also an Audi item so made by a top OEM supplier and not the tatt you find selling on eBay that is glued together with Prit Stick............ :giggle:

Yep, I agree Baker - but that much money for something that doesn't make it go faster or handle better? They're only seen as 'cool' by a proportion of people, and once the novelty wears off...

I guess I just don't see the need for them in this country. What are bikers meant to do to make themselves more visible when everyone has got bright lights ?

Flaming EU gravy train incompetents...

OK - moan over :D

In essence that's exactly what they are though. I know you have experience of this industry so I take your point about development and testing costs and I imagine they have to undergo all sorts of safety tests ... but after the testing is done they are still just a strip of quality LEDs mounted on some suitable backplate for the front of your car. Even incorporating the manufacturing and licensing costs, per unit these are massively expensive ... but then again so are most extras on a car, it's a sector they make lots of markup on.

Actually this type of LEDs under the bumper don't look bad at all. Why can I see me wiring some up myself in the near future? Wish people would quit posting stuff that ends up going on my possible to-do list. ;) The ones they mount in the headlights make the car look as if it's wearing makeup .... the Mrs assures me I mean eye-liner but to me it's all makeup. They even stick them on the R8.

I don't really agree with the 'biker's' comment and I used to be one, the difference is that biker's are always going to be one of those things on the road you either see or you don't, regardless if they have their lights on or not, DRL's are specced to be much brighter than your average biker's headlamp but surely anything to improve safety is a good thing for driver's?

That's the problem there, you assume it's a strip of LED's mounted on a suitable backing plate but as these things, in most cases run pretty hot to achieve legal output, then they are mounted to a heatsink, this is costly and expensive, I know for a fact that each R8 LED for the DRL has a mini heatsink on the back as I have one of those lamps dis-assembled on my desk...........

Wait until you see the DRL on the Aston Martin One-77 I have just finished working on, looks awesome........... ;)

I have gone brighter on the Tiger, 50W H7 Hid on the dip beam, 50W H9 on high beam with a twin light driver that let's me put both on at the same time for retina burning purposes. Soon there will be loads of bod's ditching the Side light + fog light = "Kewl headlights" and just running round with DRL's on.

I like the look of some of them, but is there any real need for them? how about an EU directive that dictates that A pillars should be made out of unobtanium and 5mm thick to allow drivers to see without major blind spots and survive a roll :)

Had an R8 behind the superb (not for long I might add LOL) and the DRL's where so bright as to be distracting and because it was daylight the auto dimming mirror did not "dim" a quick change of mirror angle sorted it, but for those few moment's I was distracted by a WTF is that behind me .... fek me they are bright when I should have been concentrating on the 20mph limit down past the schools on Long Lane.

So sorry, not convinced by the effectiveness of drl's.

Been thinking about this and can't decide if I like the look of DRLs or not .... so guess the only way to find out is to fit some and see how I get on.

Going for an ultra cheapo method to begin with, with a non-cutting installation just as a test. If I end up liking them will opt for something more permanent. Will post pics when I get around to doing it.

You never know, they may look ok .... or they may just end up looking rather attention seeking. We'll see.

The only stumbling block I can see is where to take a feed for them? I don't want to hack any existing wiring to shreds to feed power to them. An unused fog wiring harness would be ideal .... just without looking I have no idea if there is one. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Well my project materials arrived this morning. As I said before I'm doing this cheapo ... bigtime! Mainly just because I can't decide if I like DRLs or how they'll look on my land barge, so it's essentially a mock up.

Also I don't strictly want DRLs. I don't want them on in the daytime and off when l flick headlights on. (If you did want them to act like regular DRLs it'd be easy enough to wire with a relay though I guess). Nor do I want them that bright.

So with the above in mind the weatheproof LEDs cost £7 delivered  Well I did say cheapo mock-up project after all! I'm going to figure out a way of doing a cutless installation too. Don't want to hack any bumper parts away or strip wires back etc etc. I'll pos up some pictures once done probably.

In the end though it's just going to look like a set of DRLs to see if I like them. If not, they'll be coming off and I'll just fit the LEDs to my microwave/next door's dog/the wife's bra .... whatever, take your pick.

Wifes bra ......... with pics :)

I figured I'd mount and wire these in and then decide if I liked them ... as it happens I went all lazy today and basically placed them in position and used an external power supply. Here's the result ... bear in mind this is a mock up only to see what they're likely to end up looking like. So ignore the wires, wonky lights, etc etc

truth be told .... don't think I like them. It could be the fact you can see the individual LEDs, as opposed to a single strip of white light .... it could be the length of the strip, pretty sure it stretches around towards the wheels too far. Just not too keen. Doubt this'll get done to mine. Well not in it's current incarnation anyhow.

Im all against those lights, but your mock up looks quite cool somehow, maybe its because it doesnt look quite like youve bought a strip of lights from fleabay and wrapped them round your headlights a million times like most clowns do :giggle:

But yes, the whole idea of them, to me at least, is rather pretencious, I cringe every time I see an Audi with them now, I hold them in the same light as Lexus style lights.

As a project though, COOL

Btw, is your Superb lowered?

You see I'm with you about them looking pretentious and the ones in the headlights look even worse. The only reason I tried them was that in 2011 every new car will come with DRLs and perhaps the cars without DRLs will begin to look quite dated ...... kinda like when most car manufacturers switched their indicator lenses from orange to clear. Gradually every car with orange indicator lenses looked old somehow. Either way I doubt they'll be making a permanent addition to the car, although I may actually go ahead and do a proper job of mocking them up instead of a 30 second effort.

Yeah car is lowered -30mm.

PS: You're right also about Lexus lights. You Sir, have a modicum of taste.

For me the same applies to Xenon's in comparison to Halogen's, if every car had them on your eyes would be used to them............

Fair play for having a go but for me I am just not convinced and I see too many people do the same thing on their car and it just looks like it's trying to be something it's not.............

Have you thought about changing your Front DI bulbs to silvervision versions to loose the 'fried egg' look?

Well I started off by saying DRLs are rubbish. Then for some odd reason I figured I should have a go at mocking them up. Having done that, I'm pretty certain my original opinion holds true. :smirk: I don't like them.

As for the "fried egg" look. Actually no, I hadn't considered it. Never really noticed them before. But yeah cheers for that .... because I ****ing well have done now. Why don't you just take my wallet and empty it whilst you're at it. :p Seriously though, you got any pictures of yours for comparison?

Sorry mate, it's a cheap mod and will look so much better, here you go:

Yeah well they're ordered now, guess I should stop whining.

Well done mate..............

Now I am being dumb here, but what is different on that headlamp?

Now I am being dumb here, but what is different on that headlamp?

Look at the outboard section of the lamp, this is your DI (Directional Indicator), you will notice that mine appears silver whereas allclownsareevi's is orange.........

Hmm, yes I now also wish you hadnt pointed that out :p. I did that mod on my Focus couple years ago, wish I kept the bulbs now :)
